So for those of you who have went auto to 5 speed manual, how do you like it? Hows it compared to the auto? big difference? Post you thoughts. Thanks guys. :biglaugh:

Umm its a personal thing ..... I love manual cars. However I could not find a 5 speed turbo so I bought an auto and drove it for about 4 months at 10-11psi and the tranny started to slip a bit. I had a wrecked NA so I swapped over the n/a 5 speed parts over and was boosting 14psi for about a year and half then the w58 finally died with 220,000+ miles on that tranny.

It would have lived longer if I had checked the gear oil. One day I just said let me check and I noticed there wasn't any gear oil in the damn thing. I filled it when I did the swap and some how it leaked but ohh well. It started to grind really bad about a month after I filled her up with gear oil then I landed a sweet deal on a r154.

No complaints!! 5 speed cars are fun

Definately one of the better things I've done to my car (thanks Bill/Duane/Don!):icon_bigg Car is alot funner to drive, and has a "edgier' sports car feel to it. Unless you want a pure drag race car above 800whp, there is no reason to stay auto!:nono:

I am swapping the auto for a 5 speed in my 92, but I will eventually go back to a turbo 400 auto in the future. I broke the budget this year on the car, so the auto setup will come another day. I had to put the 5 speed in for now because I would have trashed a stock auto with a 67mm singled 2J.

If you want a 5-speed then the swap is definitely worth it. Biggest downfall I've come across is that I like to hammer through the gears every chance I get and end up with not-so-good gas mileage.

I heard somewhere that the auto ecu is set up diffrent than the manual trans ecu, which casuses the turbo to spool up slower in between shifts. Has anyone thats done this swap experienced this?

No.

The auto ECU uses input from the engine ECU. The manual does not. Spooling is different due to the lower engine load of the automatic trans. The automatic has a lower load due to slippage in the torque converter.

Fuck no ..... excuse "my french". What sense would that make? The only thing i can think of is the spool difference would be cause by the time it takes to shift. No human can shift faster than an auto PERIOD.

edit: damn it nick :)

i think you might be wrong sir. more load, means more hot expanding gasses. These of which spool up the tubine, inturn making boost build. As far as I know, the automatic might be worse in a sense that the torque convertor is slipping all the time, reducing load. That's why i thought that the manual read two different boost levels, for the auto and the manual. 6.0psi and 7.5psi
no? :dunno:

Tremec TKO 5 speed to Built Auto!

Best thing I've done for my car :)

I would love a built auto trans, but money is the only obstacle.

So the turbo shouldn't spool up slower. OK thanks for your input guys. :biglaugh:
