Hi, I used the Polk Audio DB6500 Component set. I made no modifications to the door. It is not a direct fit, but I used the stock speaker mounting screws as kind of a placeholder to hold the new larger speaker in place. As for the tweeter, I removed the old one and wedged new in its place and then tightened the stock screws on the housing to keep it in place.

The attached pic is part of my build. Hope it makes sense. I can post a more detailed pic at the end of the week when I get my car back.

It looks cheap, but it works for me. There is no play whatsoever.

Here are the specs:

Peak Power Handling: 300W
Continous Power Handling: 100W
Frequency Response: 40-23kHz

I use the California Profile AP1000 (4ch - 250W Peak/100W Continous per channel) to power these.

My stockers were blown before I got the car, so any speaker would had sounded better. Here are my initial impressions after playing these at 3/4 max volume on the deck for about 5 min (this is all I wanted for the moment).

- Sound was clear.
- I perceived some lack of midrange. Hopefully with all the recently added sound deadening in place, it will sound better. I will know after I get my car back.
- They are loud enough for my musical tastes. I prefer quality or quantity in regards to sound levels.

Once I get my car back, I will finish up the install and then tune to my liking.

I just cut the back of the mounts out :)

+1

I have an '88, but I have the newer speaker pods and I had to cut and grind them to fit my speakers... I didn't have to do anything at all to the door, though, if that's what you're talking about.

I have Alpine SPR-17Cs, and they have pretty large magnets, so it would take a hell of a speaker to require any more modification than I had to do (although my Boston Acoustics Z6s would have required a LOT more grinding due to the basket).

I have the yellow coned Pioneers in my supra. I also have ran Crossfire CQ6 components.

Anything with a neodynium<sp> magnet on the driver will fit...

I'm upgrading to Focals in the near future so if you are interested I'd be willing to let go of either pair of my speakers if you want
