This is my golf vs a dairy farm . It was a foggy night, i was taking the back roads to my friends house. I was late. We were going to go party. i had taken that road many times before but : I did not remember a 90 degree turn . I was going 60 all the way in a 25 MPH road(FULL OF TWISTYS ) I then see this light flashing about 5 feet away from me a yellow light with the sign posted up saying 15 MPH turn. Up a head there's a dairy farm with a wall up dirt and tires. I understeered like there's no tomorrow. I did not want to hit the front of the car and so i pulled the e-brake to hit the back. I don't know, if any of you guys have ever been hit by air bags but , let me tell you it hurts alot. I crashed going 60 in to the turn. My head hit the window and i just remember my friend telling me if i was all right.
ok pics:

Every one told me VW'S were safe, i did not believe them. Until i chased

SBS: Thanks I painted it the original 113 :)

Jag: Thanks (I had to lean on my friends pretty heavily to make it through)

Ms: Was touch and go there for quite awhile had a LOT of setbacks and my Mother was told to arrange the funeral...

Os: When I did all the Sheetmetal work on mine I kept crumple zones in mind and made it progressively stronger back to the seats, where I came unstuck was being lazy and not getting around to installing the seat back brace...... DOH

I only posted this to try and save someone reading the title and 1st few posts and going out thinking they're in the Super Indestructable Supra and getting hurt.

Yeah, so not only is IJ's cars built IJ tough, so is IJ.

That Z may be badass, but you gotta be pretty badass to make it through that, props mate.

I've seen your crash photos before Ian, but never the list of your injuries. Dang, you are very lucky to be alive, that is for sure.

Whoever said cars have crush or crumple zones, is absolutely correct. The newer the design, generally the better they are too. (This was invented by Benz many years ago.)

Today, most of the crumple zones are ahead of the front strut towers, and behind the rear wheelhouse area. Cars are basicly three areas of inertia, the front, center and rear, and generally the front has the most inertia due to the engine/trans being there. Our old Supra's are pretty good designs, but they were overbuilt, especially the targa roof models. (This is admitted by the Toyota engineer who was in charge of the car. He admits that it's too heavy due to them not wanting to give up struture for light weight.) This pays off when you crash the car in that there is more to crush, but you pay for it every time you try and do anything else with the car. (A fine trade off in my view.) It also makes the car so quiet and stable/rattle free.

If you are going to "improve" on your cars structure, I reccomend the following. (And I'm also a dead guy here. Died on the operating table for my knee surgery.. still can't sing right because of it... )

If you seam weld, or stitch weld the car, only do it between the strut towers. Leave the front and rear sections alone so they can deform as designed.
Same goes for adding roll cages or support beams.
You can make the passenger area as strong as you want.
As IJ noted, make sure your seat is well attached. You can have the best seat and harness in the world, but if they break loose under a crash, they do you zero good.

Just my .02, but then again, I do deal with this stuff everyday :)

Kyle: Sooner or later if you play the game you end up paying ;)
(My one and only accident, I'd always said if I have one it's going to be huge/fatal)

Keros: LOL just stubborn :)
(they told me there was a good chance I'd never walk again)

J3: Thanks

Greg: Yep it was about as bad as you can get and still make it out the other side, they ran out of my blood type at one of the biggest trauma centres in Melbourne.

Big plug here from me on keeping the speed down a little bit on public streets..... we all think it's cool to see what it'll do or always drive fast (that was me).

Short story about my big one:
16 y/o smart as hell and knew how to drive better than anyone (ring any bells?), damp road, 110 in my dad's Big Healey, took about 1/2 second to lose it, rolled it into a field, thrown from car, basically 'caught' by a barb-wire fence, multiple injuries.. most notably left leg amputation, given 12 pints of blood, multiple other crap, eye hanging out at the scene (like gory details?), basal skull fracture, many stitches, etc. Bottom line: doesn't matter what the hell you're driving at that speed. I totally agree with IJ, and I didn't even hit anything solid, its the physics. In my case a body in motion (mine) stays in motion until something gets in the way (fence).

I hate/love to preach; keep it safe kids.

Yep, they are 18's. I have B+G springs with KYB shocks and it rubs a lot in the front so take that into consideration.
