Jtamulis is Jeff.
I (Jon) build 90% of all of Jeffs turbos, with the remaining 10% being GENUINE NEW MASTER POWER frames.
If all you are looking for is 400hp, then yes the JT56 / 57trim to4e is the way to go.

Sorry to dig this thread back up, but it saves me clutering supramania by starting a new one.. I too am at the daunting stage of selecting the right turbo for my 7m build. I have conservative goals for the time being, between 270-290rwkw using the stock injectors, standalone EMS, 3" exhaust, 3" core intercooler, 255l walbro. The engine will have Ross forgies, bearings, MHG, yada, yada.. So I plan on it being capable of 330-350rwkw which is my long term goal..

Soo, I want a turbo that will spool nice and early providing lots of low down responsivness, but still be capable of pushing ~350rwkw(~470rwhp) when i get bigger injectors and fatter wheels/tyres down the track.

Because I want the low down boost i'm thinking i'll have to stick with a ball bearing turbo I'm thinking the SP61GTBB, but they are quite exxy at ~$1800, are there any other good options out there that will give me what i'm after? I don't really want a highflowed ct-26, as i don't trust running the standard shaft with a bigger compressor wheel for a great deal of time..

JT61GT = FTW!

Alot better turbo imho than the older SP61GTs. I blew up 6 of them last year. They reallllllly hate over oiling (high oil pressure) and oil contamination (any turbo really hates that)

Im not sure how the newer SP61GTs are but i know they made some big changes to them. might want to talk to jeff (notrice) or mdc and ask them to kick around some ideas.

Honestly for install ease the boss rear housing is alot nicer than SP's cast iron.

I had one of the earlier SP61GT's. It only cost $1150 with oil lines. I was very happy with its ability to make excellent power (451rwhp at 21psi) and good spool-up. Mine held up for the full 10k miles that I had it. Had very little shaft play when I sold it.

I know have a slightly larger SP59GT thats bolted to a HPF tubular manifold. I know make about 10 more rwhp and a lot a lot more lag. Hardly worth it.

I think any of the bolt-on turbos like SP and Boss are great choice for someone looking for 4-500rwhp. You can get the regular SP61GT for much less without the DBB option. The improved turbine design of the SP61GT is supposed to create even better spool.

Ok but when do these sleeve bearing turbos start making positive pressure? To me, a responsive turbo setup is far more important than the ability to make 500rwhp.. I want absolutely minimal lag. MRSUPRA, 10,000 miles out of a turbo isnt really impressive, with a healthy oil and coolant suply they should last 100,000 miles and still have no shaft play, does anyone know if the 61GTs out there are running a thicker shaft than a stocky ct26?

supra racer 24, I noticed you're in Lexington. Pay a visit to Fast Enough Performance down on Dawes road and they may be able to help steer you in the right directionas well (I find in person discussions tend to get better results). They've built and tested many supras and turbo combinations over the last several years, and tune them. They have yet to steer anyone I know wrong on turbo choices. There's a group of us that commute there a couple of times a year from Toronto just for tuning based on their knowledge and our experiences with them.

Kemicalx - Were you riding with the rest of the posse down to KY a few months back? If so, how did that turn out? I was suppose to make the trip but ended up being caught up with work, spurr of the moment kind of thing.
Hope it turned out well! :icon_razz

KemecalX, I sold the turbo with 10k miles on it and the owner who has it says its still going strong. The SP61GT made full boost around 4K RPM in the lower gears and 3300rpm in 4th gear. If you want vertually no lag, stick with CT-26 upgrades. I had the CT-26 upgrade before my SP61GT and I prefered the SP61GT's powerband much more because its ability to pull hard all the way to redline. And there is no comparison between the durability between an SP61 and an upgraded CT-26. One is properly designed, the other is NOT.

Yep, I was there. Alan Jordan and Steve N came by and we went around a bit with them while one of our cars was being set up, and then went for Indian food that evening. We had 2 supras and a couple of support vehicles in tow as well. A smaller meeting than we usually have, but good times as always.
