Exterior Custom Ricer 2-tone spray-paint. Z32 Headlights.

So this is my first Supra. I picked this up behind a barn for free. It's an 87 non-turbo, lots of miles on the chassis but the motor has a rebuilt head.

Here's the first issue I noticed on the car. Cut springs

A little about myself... my nickname is Nar. (short for Narayan, pro-nounced nuh-ryan) I'm no stranger to modifying cars... I've had an RX3, a few RX7's, and a Z. I work at a speed shop. Driving is my favorite hobby. Most of my skills I learned on the touge but I'm also a high-performance driving instructor at my local track.

I just recently got the car running again and there's a huge list of problems I want to fix. The big issues at the moment are it wont idle (you can't even start it unless you floor it) and it stutters at WOT if your driving it. The check engine light is on and I got the following codes: TPS sensor, O2 sensor, Knock Sensor. Next I plan on checking the EGR valve, ignition timing and wether or not the exhaust is clogged. Any other ideas?

Thanks

TPS - just need to adjust per the TSRM.

found here.

http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/default.aspx

clean the o2 sensor and then see if its really bad... that will obvisouly give you too much fuel which wont make the car too happy.

if your getting a code for the knock sensor you either have bad wiring to them, or there bad... but that will effect your driveability a lot.

obvisouly you need to check timing, and make sure the vacuum lines and intake lines are all hooked up right.

just go read through the TSRM in the areas that you have problems, and most issues can be solved rather easily.

I really wish I had a TSRM. I haven't been able to find one used anywhere so I'll guess I'll have to buy one. I've found that one online before but I can already tell from comparing my car to an 89 that there are significant differences. For instance I tried swapping the EGR off an 89 unto my 87 and they are obviously different. The later years seem to have less vacuum control solenoids as well.

I didn't think the oxygen sensor or the knock sensor would prevent the car from starting? It literally will not get going unless your foot is nearly floored when you turn the key. Otherwise it just stutters a a bit and dies again.

Chico is about 2 hours north of Sacramento. I replaced all the vacuum lines already and I cleaned the TB and the motor thoroughly with AMSOIL powerfoam. I've moved so much that its no joke I've seen more of this state then most will in their lifetimes. I spent plenty of time in Socal.

your starting issue is most likely due the TPS not being adjusted right. its probably on backwards, thus why you need to FLOOR it to start. because starting is suppose to be 0%... not 100%. haha

that TSRM is for a 90... so yeah, but a haynes manual has most of the same pictures, and same info. the basic info, like the TPS, codes, how to adjust things are the same, but yes things like the EGR, and other small things may be different.

but the biggest difference you'll find with things is if their turbo or not...

you have an 87, its the most common supra known to man, so you should have no problem finding ANYTHING you need on this site, if you need another throttle body, or a TPS, i have 2 or 3 i could ship for $5.... I use to have an 86.5 n/a so i have a shit ton of left over parts, so yeah...

its always nice to have the manual in front of your face, especially when doing TPS adjustments, and other small things where you dont wanna run back upstiars to see what the voltages are suppose to be.

Nice I may have to take you up on some parts Rennat and yes I agree an actual service manual is gold. I've been relying mostly on Alldata... or as I like to call it somedata lol.

Is there a trick connecting the TPS? What you said makes a lot of sense.. I looked more closely at it and the spring mechanism inside looks like it wouldn't work properly if the plastic tabs didn't snap over the metal fins on the throttle body exactly.

The Cygnus site that the link took you to, is the complete Factory service manual for the car. I find it to be invaluable!

Welcome to the site ZAR! You will find most people here will encourage a turbo swap. You will also find more knowledge than Toyota around here.

I've never owned a turbocharged car before, just never seems to happen. I'm sure it would be nice, but the type of driving I do favors NA's anyway so I'm not worried about having the fastest car around. I just want my car to help me be a faster driver.

I have made progress but it isn't helping... I noticed that the Idle speed Controller connector had some broken wires so I fixed that, replaced the O2 sensor and knock sensor and adjusted the TPS some more and it seems now when I start the car the check engine light doesn't stay on anymore... instead it flashes with the battery light?

When I get it to start by flooring it, I can get it to rev again once but then it dies again no matter what?

Is that an RX3 in your SIG???? what did you do to it!!

Heh, that was my SCCA Pro-Rally RX3. I had my fun with it rally racing,

and I was planning on modifying it for track use as well. I was in the middle of the planning stages for that and I drove the car to Thunderhill to help out with a drifting competition. But the reason I needed to modify that RX3 for track use was because it had lots of ground clearance and really soft suspension.

The event organizer is a good friend of mine and he talked me into drifting the RX3 because I had plenty of practice drifting my RX7's previously. I ended up rolling it and sliding it on its roof a hundred feet or so.

Update... replaced alternator and put a brand new TPS on. The new TPS helps, I can drive the car around but it'll still die if I let the rev's drop below 1100 or so and it still won't start unless its floored.

But clearly what I've been doing helps cause there is no longer any check engine light.

all this work on the TPS... but did you ever set it to the TSRM specs and prodecures?

sounds like you have a lot of stuff wrong though... car have good spark plugs, wires, and the timing is right?

and does the car idle at all? or does it have to be kept at 1100 with the gas a little down?

Toss it and start over with another supra maybe. :biglaugh:

You got a lot of bugs to work out. How's the condition of your engine harness? 935motorsports rebuilds engine harnesses if yours is f-ed up.

You can get stock springs on here for near nothing. People will just give them away.

Doing a turbo swap on supras is very easy. I did one ealier this year. Toyota was very kind with the chasis. Turbos and NA's have the exact same chasis so the bolt holes are already there for everything and it's pretty much plug and play.

Good luck! Oh and pack your bags with lots of patience. You will need it. These can be very frustrating cars.

Rally kicks ass. I thought I was the only one in the USA that really loves it but there are a few people around that get into it. "Not the BS at the Xgames" Group B Bitches!!
Ive wanted an RX3 for a crazy long time!!! you better fix it
