The Hunting Thread

Ok guys and gals, I recently started hunting and while I haven't had a shot on anything yet I'm really looking forward to it.

So this is a thread to discuss different prey, different hunting techniques, preference in weaponry etc...

IN Va there is a Bow season before firearms are allowed which is what we are in right now. Monday evening I was sitting in a ground blind about 35 yards away from a friend in a tree stand at the end of a field...I saw about 10 wild turkey hens, but without an archery license or crossbow/bow I couldn't do much but watch. Then Wednesday night on a friends farm I spotted 4 does one of which was HUGE! I had purchased my crossbow license so I could borrow my friends but to no avail...a clear shot wasn't presented and I don't want to simply maim an animal..if I don't get a good killing shot..I simply won't take it.

I'm primarily looking for turkey, but the excitement of having those deer around my was a rush I haven't felt in a long time. I can't wait for muzzleloader season, and then for regular firearms my CVA Buckhorn .50 caliber and my Mosin Nagant 7.62x54r are gonna be a blast to handle out in the deer/turkey woods.

good to see another bowhunter. i hunt alittle with my dad, hes really big into it(deer). i just like to shoot the bow, takes alot of practice and concentration manly because i dont use a release, fingers FTW. never gotten anything, but i have gotten a few shots off in the past. shooting out of a treestand is alot different from shooting at a target at the same elevation as you.

lanky are you member of any archery clubs? they can have alot to offer in the way of challenging target courses that can really help you hit what your aiming at. althouh i dont know how many will let you use a crossbow.

Personally I like having my own personal viscious attack Theresa.

I think the stingray would be screwed, she's scary with a pizza cutter. :p

I know of 3 people who have done this..

My late Uncle did it twice..

I have no desire to hunt bear tho...most of the time you have to use bait...and i don't like that...if anything I'd stalk a bear with my Mosin, but I wouldn't bait one...just like I don't like food plots for deer hunting..takes the challenge out of scouting..stand/blind placement etc..


as for the archery clubs..no i'm not involved...archery/crossbows are not my ideal hunting tool...I'm simply using a friends crossbow to get myself used to and adjust to how hunting works...
I'll get pics of my guns soon... anybody taken anything already this year? post up pics!

depends on the bear and how healthy they are...there were def. difference between the two..most healthy animals will have soft fur.. deer, bear, etc..their hide is thick and heavy and it keeps them from being scratched up alot. There is also certain types of conditioners and cleaners and chemicals are applied to th pelt after it is removed in order to keep bugs out of it and clean the dirt and dander off of the fur. but my unlces rugs were way soft.

What are type or rifle/shotgun are you using?
boar hunting looks challenging...thier sense of smell is incredible..


Here's a pic of what I got to enjoy wednesday afternoon....the great thing about being outdoors is just that..being out doors.
