yeah, thank goodness for no bhg...knock on wood haha

So, today we pulled the dash and started tearing out stuff that we were never going to use such as the heater core, ac unit inside the car and miscellaneous crap that shouldnt be in a racecar.

We also started cutting some of the harness to clean it up a bit and to get rid of some plugs that we dont need floating around to confuse us. We also looped the coolant lines going to the heater core and started taking all the tar up in the car and ripped out the carpet.

Now there is about a three finger gap in the rear where as before it was tucking. Interior looks like crap for now until we get the rest of the tar up and sand everything down and paint it. We are also trying to decide what we want to do with the dash. We may chop it up a bit or just leave it, we'll see. Also we are considering seam/stitch welding the chassis but that might be a bit redundant once the cage goes in. Anyway enough blabbering on with the pics......

just to add..i think we started working on the car around 11 am today, took an hour lunch break around 3:30, lost day light and packed it up to go home at 8. solid day of work :) the only thing we havent torn apart yet are the door panels. All three of us like them too much to hack them up. So we're probably gonna gut the doors as much as we can, and leave the panels on. We're willing to deal with the weight..the remaining crap, i mean, parts, will be for sale really soon, so stay tuned for a link to the for sale thread.

the dash is staying, it's in pretty good shape, but we need it for structure. the steering wheel MIGHT go if we can afford a cheap aftermarket setup. the rest of the interior on the other hand is getting sold or junked. all interior plastics, trim, carpet, etc. will be available.

you can get a junker one without an airbag from an mkiii, might be 5$ or free ;)

how did you remove the tar stuff?

we were going to use dry ice but got cheap and lazy and just ended up using a screw driver and hammer. It worked surprisingly well. Next well wire wheel the sticky stuff off, prime it and paint it.

Finally an update!!! So today, I got some time to sand down the interior and paint it. Man it is A LOT of WORK!! I got started at 830 am and proceeded to pull the dash and seat and what not so that I wouldnt get everything covered in dust. I took my wire wheel to get to the thick tar and used my 5" electric sander to get everything smooth.....here is a pic from my phone from when i was sanding everything down. Then I grabbed my camera when I ran out to get some more paint.....

I realized that I wasnt going to have time to do the full interior in a day so I just did from the front seat forward. I think in another full day or even shorter if I can get avi and edwin to help and the rear will be done. Anyway, here are some more pics through the stages of primer and different coats....

haha yeah pretty much....right now it is insanely loud when you get on it but i think once we make our side exit exhaust with a nice resonator it shouldnt be too bad.

Nice pics man! I'm really curious to see how this turns out, good luck with everything! I ran Koni yellows and Eibach springs on my 88 hardtop, and that thing was stiff as hell! :D

Oh, and if the trim pieces (on the outside of the b-pillar, behind the window) are loose and rattling (like most targa cars I've come across), 4 5mm lock nuts will fix that. Just saying, they're really easy to get to when your interior is out like that. :)

Any updates lately?
