I have problems with my targa in my 88....

It squeaks, rattles, and the bolts get loose after an hour of riding back roads.

Any ideas?

(and yes it leaks)

The targa will always shimmy itself loose. Just retighten them every now and then.

mine is nice and tight... how hard do you tighten it? it uses a standard allen key type socket... why not see if you can get the right size with a bigger wrench and tighten the shit out of it.

or get yourself another targa roof , bolt it up and see if it stays on.

I've been under the impression that you can't swap targas because of fitment issues.

I tighten the hell out of it. I use an 3/8 drive allen on a ratchet since its been having this problem. Its bad enough to make me want to find a different body.

There has to be a better solution.

Once I tighten mine up with a torx bit and 3/8 ratchet it will be solid for months. Sounds like your threads are just worn.

Mine will come loose occasionaly, and you will hear a loud "SLAM!" above your head as you go over bumps, or are on the freeway, then you know it has to be tightened...It also makes rubbing noises as I go over bumps at the front of the traga, where the weatherstripping meets...it is annoying AS FUCK!!!!!!!!

But anyway, for the original poster, don't try and tighten the targa bolts too much (especially the fronts) because it will create a little bump on the outside of the targa...ask me how I know...:nono:.

Should have no problem changing targas!!! My new used targa fits the same as my old hailed out one. Gaskets and a good tightening are the secret!!!!

Good luck

The Fiance's MKIV gets a "targa-loose" condition often.... I was noticing that it's barely starting on my MKIII.... I was under the impression that you could replace the bolts or assembly (inexpensively) and figured I'd eventually get to it. Does anyone know for sure?

The chasis had nothing to do with how the car's engine performed.:3d_frown:

Don't knock the hardtops! They'll leave your lap dry while driving in the rain!

Edit:: My cousin's got a targa and do have that really nice "cool factor" when driving around topless in the summer ;).

Wow, I sure do love the way when gixxer asked a question about his targa; he got back mostly replys saying "HARD TOPS PWN U!!!11!!!!ONE!1"

I don't have a solution for you, gixxer. I would recommend against loc-tite, it would just be cumbersome. I would try new seals and I always lighten the bejesus out of mine and I don't have any problems with it losening that quickly.
