Yea it not the bottom end, but with the valve tick should I be worried about it?

Not neccessarily worried But if your car was leaking oil wouldn't you want to fix it?

I have the same thing and always have, it's your valve clearances..

I started using 5w-40 to decrease the level of noise, at least until I can take the head off and re-shim everything within spec.

If it's ticking, it means the gap is too large, won't hurt anything (well, compared to a gap that's too small and keeps the valve from closing)

Now in the U.S.
ok, well I put 10w30 and it seemed to have made it quieter. Was told 10w30 was what the spec was on the 2j.. Well thanks again. I'll keep an eye on it then see if it gets worse or not.

You generally increase the weight of the oil with the mileage of the engine but the climate also factors in. Try and see what 10W-40 looks like in single digit temperatures.

Was that to me? Are you telling me I am supposed to use 5-20 on a 225,000 mile engine?

Yes, our shop S10 has that much, well almost there, it is at 224,xxx, and we use 10-40 on it.

Most all Toyota's take 5W-30. Unless you can magically make all the oil passages bigger, all you did was decrease flow. Temp has nothing to do with it either. Even if you use a 0W in tripple digits doesn't mean its thinner. If your oils overheated thicker oil does not fix a damn thing.

Funny, he's right, so long as the cooling circuit was upgraded. So long as operating temps are higher than ambient, the oil shouldn't be overheating so a 0w-30 is no thinner than a 10w-30. Now at start up is a different story.

Startup you want the lowest weight possible. The oil does not get thicker as it heats up, it just doesn't get as thin as it's supposed to if it was a single weight.

I was referring to a few different things, namely start up and a 30w vs. a 40w in regards to temps.

in all fairness, I might have misunderstood part of what he was saying.
