I don't like sex, i LOVE sex:naughty:

I started out with one supra. When i was in highschool, I drove my beloved rice machine(integra). I loved it soo much that I decided to turbocharge it.

As soon as I decided to turbocharge the integra, I ran across my supra. She was just sitting behind some old body shop, she looked very lonely.

so I talked to the owner and it turns out, the only thing wrong with it was the motor. It had rod-knock.

500 dollars and a few hours later, she was home.

ninja edit: I sold my integra as soon as the supra was ready.

I didn't have enough money to fix it for a long time. After sitting for two years, I finally had the funds to rebuild it with some extra goodies.

Only 2 months later, i have 4 supras in all. And yes, all turbo/targa/5spd.

I love them all very much. If you ever see me driving down the road, look closely, you'll see that I have a big cheesy smile on my face.

I just read this post.,..WOW...

I dont feel like the only one on this earth with the supra obsession....

I know i have had it since i saw it back in 86 as a graduating senior. Then my dream of owning one came true in 91 when i bought the 88 na targa. grey/burgandy. the memories... oh by the way thanks to all that did post some nice pics for me.

I remember someone saying that my grey one looked like a shark if you looked at it a certain way....

Well next month i will be turning the big 40 and i have one again. but its taking a longer time to get her back on the road.

anyways... my obsession. its the entire feel of the car, the drive and wind in your hair.. if you have the targa... and then the 2nd looks you get when people see your car... (if she looks good and not one that still needs painting) Some people have asked me at stop lites... what year is it... miles... engine... :biglaugh: if they only knew the truth....lol

well thanks to st2b for the original post and allowing some of us the opportunity to post why we love/obsess over SUPRAS... probably one of the best things to come of the 80's....

I have loved the Supra ever since I saw the MKII and MKIII back in the 80's. At the time, I couldn’t afford one on an Army salary. Now that my kids are teenagers and getting ready to move on into their own lives, I have the disposable income to finally own a MKIII and the resources to restore it properly. I have always liked the curves of the MKIII but never cared for the 7M, so I decided to do the 2J swap. I absolutely love my 92 and I cannot wait until the restoration and swap is completed.

Another major plus is my son enjoys working on the car and learning. It has been a fabulous father and son project and has allowed us to spend a lot of quality time together and forge lasting memories. Once this one is complete, I will probably do a 1J MKII restoration project.

I don’t foresee ever not owning a Supra in the future. I may own a MKIV one day, but I feel they are highly overpriced and simply are not worth the going rates, no matter how much I like them. Passing on the MKIV is more of a principle issue for me than a financial constraint. However, that is another conversation in itself. Maybe, one day I will own all three. I doubt I will ever own a MKI, I always thought they were ugly :)

Since you all have explained how the obsession started, perhaps its time for me to reflect.....

It started back in high school. Like most people, I really liked the MkIV, but didn't really have any money for a car besides my 1985 Toyota Pickup. So I waited. After high school was done, I started college, and one of the people in my class was someone that I knew from high school, who happened to have a burgundy/burgundy '87 turbo targa. We started commuting to school to save gas, and eventually I just fell in love with the MkIII. This was back when I still had my piece of shit '90 Eagle Talon TSI, so eventually I knew an upgrade was in order, lol. Sold the Talon, saved some money, and then I found my '87 turbo targa in Denver. The car needed some work, but the first time I drove it I was grinning from ear to ear. Several thousand dollars later, it was mine, and now that I have it I will never get rid of it. There are also plans to buy a second one day, lol.

Well I got to thinking last night, and I want to hear it from everyone.

What I want to know is, what is it about the Supra you are addicted to?
I mean, let's face it, it's just a car. Some people might disagree, but listen here...

Last night I spent some time with an old buddy who is in love with LS1's. Not my taste, but it made me think, A LOT!

That being said, here are some examples... I almost feel like a kid over-obsessed with a band, or something.

I sleep, in my bed, in my mark 2 seats, EVERY NIGHT. All I ever think about at school is what I'm going to do for my Supra (Except AP Biology, in there I just stare out the window looking for a Supra to drive by). I have my room painted the color of my Supra, and I have pictures of various MkIII's hung up all over the wall. I have the Supra logo on my guitar, t-shirts, shoes and all over my school binders. Not including I use my old 5m block from my 83 as a nightstand. And sometimes I can't sleep unless I get a part I'm working on finished.

And every time I see a Supra passing by when I go somewhere, I act like I just saw f'ing Pamela Anderson.

What causes this obsession? And is yours as bad as mine?

Thanks guys, I could write a book about my Supra obsession but you probably have heard it all.

Obsessing that much about a car sounds very unhealthy for a HS student.

I liked cars and Supras in HS too but what you explained is on a completely different level. I still did all the normal HS things most kids do. Supras didn't consume my entire life. I was too busy with classes, sports, and other activities for that.

Do you play any sports, or extracurricular activities, or clubs, or social activities?

If not, maybe you should look into it.

I come from a land down under
Might be an age/maturity/personality thing but it's just a car ;)

Having said that I get a bit OCD with whatever project I'm involved with no matter what it is.

What attracted me to the Mk3 was it's dynamics as a car

Small capacity I-6
Rear Drive
Double A Arm suspension
Creature comforts
Body styling

I like my car, but I ain't obsessed. I want to drive it, but I can live without driving it. And about describing it sexy, well yes...but...but not so much as people have said here.
Maybe I just need some spacers for the sawblades....

Wow thanks for the posts guy! Very interesting stories, and now I don't feel like I'm the only one who is obsessed with the Toyota Supra!

Aside from this, because I never posted the "How it all started" Here it is, as follows.

Well it all started when I was around 12 years old. I was young and was looking for a new hobby. I decided it was going to be cars. Simple. So besides playing Need For Speed and watching The Fast And The Furious, I was off to save money. I settled on the Supra because of videos on the internet, how fast they were, and how they looked.

So 2 years and a lot of research later I got a job at Little Ceasers (Pizza place) holding a sign. After a few weeks I bought something I knew I could enjoy on the public roads. A Super Bike. It's a 49cc 2 stroke miniature motorcycle. Here's a pic

When I was 14, I looked miserable
p889386_2.jpg

And a few months after, I had an old lady call the cops on me for it being semi-loud. So I sold it for 250$ after doing some upgrades and bought the 83 Supra, put about 1000$ into it and parted it out.

Here's the 83 soup
p889386_3.jpg

p889386_4.jpg

And after parting it out I saved up some cash and bought a 1987 Supra

Yeah I know. I mean I don't worship it, but it IS my hobby, rather than football or something. Like going to car meets and all that good stuff. I also skate (Board), play guitar, weld, play in a band, polish and paint and other things. So I'm not only limited to Supras as you may have thought.

Well, I'm not quite as obsessed as some here. Not even close. ;)

Anyway, back when I was starting to drive, my first car was a piece of junk, otherwise known as the Ford Pinto. This thing was in sad shape - for example, the inside of the gas tank was rusting enough that every 50 miles or so you had to stop, open the hood, remove the fuel filter, wash it out with extra fuel, re-install it, close up the hood and re-start the engine. Otherwise, the engine would choke and die from lack of fuel because the filter was plugged. This is just one of many problems the car had.

Being young and impressionable, I wanted a Sports car. Like virtually every kid my age, of course. The choices of the day were pretty much limited to domestic or Japanese imports, Hyundai didn't exist yet, some kids went German with the old Volkswagen bugs or occasionally the brand new GTI, but parts and service in my part of the world for anything European was, and still is, ridiculous.

So, that meant my choices were really down to a Mustang, Camaro, Firebird, Supra, Nisaan / Datsun Z series, Corvette, (if you have more money than brains) Mazda RxX... I'm sure there were a few more at the time, but some of them have vanished from human memory by now. At least MY human memory.

By process of elimination...

Virtually all the domestics were literally terrible. Seriously, when was the last time you heard someone extolling the virtues of their 1983 Mustang? The big 3 auto manufacturers in Detroit had figured out that they made more money on repairs after the initial sale, and they really didn't have any competition in the previous decade, so they were selling total junk that often wouldn't even run when it got to the dealer. The dealerships would fix them up enough to get them off the lot, then fix them when they came back, and charge through the nose for the parts.

As if this wasn't enough, add in the fact that the Mustang was between 88 and 210 bhp, depending on your engine choice, and the average (affordable) option was the 110 bhp V6 in a 2600lb chassis. The Camaro wasn't any better, the BEST one out there was the Z28 with a 165bhp engine in a 3250lb chassis. Then add in that these cars didn't come with all the extra features - no AC, cruise control, automatic climate control, no underhood trouble light, can't turn for shit.

The Japanese manufacturers, on the other hand, were trying to break into the North American market, and were doing so with bulletproof offerings that could take the punishment and just plain didn't break down. They had had problems with steel quality rusting early on, but had this pretty much licked by the mid 80s. For example, the forest service on the west coast of Canada dropped all their domestic 4x4s and switched to Landrovers and Toyota Land Cruisers.

So, I'd pretty much decided that I was heading for the Japanese vehicles, which narrowed the search to Toyota, Nissan/Datsun, or Mazda. The Mazda was pretty much out of the running right from the start, rotary engines are neat, but they would still randomly self destruct, and most mechanics would just throw up their hands in disgust and walk away. I liked both the Supra and the Z series, and I really could have ended up with either. I ended up with a Toyota first, and they've never given me cause to look back. Even when they stopped making a sports car, I was grumbly, but I held on until they started releasing decent stuff under the Lexus name.

So, really, there wasn't much choice at the time. ;) And once I've made up my mind, I'm about equal parts stubborn and lazy.

When I was little I believe I saw either an old Mitsubishi starion or a mkII supra, and loved the angles of that 80's styling. both being similar I can't remember which it was...but i thought they were cool. that stuck with me. pretty much permanent attraction.

my uncle had a 4x4 pickup, and in the back to the future movies I fell in love with Marty's toyota 4x4...the looks and possible modified looks of the older toyota pickups, i thought, were just awesome.

I acutally wasn't looking for a supra when i found mine. I figured they were too expensive and didn't really know anything about them. I WAS looking for a 4runner. around here however, a nice one is hard to come by for a less-than-insane starting price...

Then my friend got a supra, and was selling it, so I bought it, falling in love with it after we test drove it. it was my first ride in a sportscar and even though it was N/A it felt good at full throttle.

Now, it's mostly how the car looks, feels, and hugs the road better than any other car i've driven (although i haven't driven that many). I like the way it's luxurious and i love how it's fenders are flared out just enough to give it a great look without being overdone, and it's noticeable. even though it's now 22 years old I still get compliments from random people when it's washed and waxed (gravel driveway is bad...). plus, kids in highschool liked it, and one of my good friends had an older brother with a black 87 turbo auto that I always liked..

It's not the fastest or the coolest, but I'm used to it, it fits me, i know the engine bay like no other car i've seen, and I feel confident driving it...even though i worry sometimes about engine problems :p

It's a nice step between today's roundness and yesteryear's boxyness. i like variations of both, but the supra just fits perfectly inbetween. OH...and people like the "eye" headlights ;)

I can't seem to get away from them. I'm trapped in a supra hell. Every time I think I'm going to break out, I get drug back in.... Honestly I don't know why.

OH and as far as supra in my life besides the actual car... i'm going to take one of the sparkplugs from my BHG and make it a keychain. The plug that was steam cleaned that is :)

I also gawk at other supras but i'm trying to cool that down a bit, they are just cars. :) Except one BEAUTIFUL 89+ mkIII with a turbo and gunmetal gray paint that I REALLY wish would come on the market when i can afford a new car.

One thing currently is a MKIII Gran Turismo 4 competition... hehe.

see here - Gran Turismo 4 Challenge

Admit it though, for the rest of your life, EVERY time you see a Supra, you will always take a second look at it. I'm sure everyone here is the same, even if they have had bad Supra experiences.

Nope. If I do a motor swap on a MKIII, it will be to an LS1 with a wicked cam. Honestly, the 7M I love over the JZ, because of the extra torque (this is NOT a lightweight rev happy vehicle!)

A cammed LS1 in this body, with Toyota engineering, would be pure sex on wheels.

I think the reason I like them so much is because the simple fact that sometime in my lifetime there will be no such thing as the Toyota Supra. I mean, them getting wrecked, totaled, parted and trashed, I don't think I ever want to give up my Supra. It seriously makes me sad when I parted out my MkII. It was so clean I wish I would have dropped a new motor in it or fixed the headgasket.
