So I tried my hand at painting the valve covers (I only did 1 so far) and I'm obviously not so good! :nono: It seems I over sprayed quite a bit. I'm not happy with the outcome so I'm gonna sand them down again and try it again. Masking those ribs off are a real PITA. And then when I take the tape off, the adhesive stays on the cover. Here is a picture:

Also, got around to replacing the rear main seal and the seal retainer. It's back on the engine:

And so I can finally get to use this:

That's all for now.

Well, Ron...if you're not happy with it, just consider it a base coat! That's the beauty of paint. ;)

I agree with supraguy. Painting the whole thing then hit the ribs with a brush or sandpaper would be easier.

Progress is moving forward. That's a good thing! :)

I just bought one of those. Harbor Frieght ftw. My GTE is on one of those right now in the garage. :)

A tip- Don't mask off the ribs, hand paint them with a small brush.
Way easier.

Excellent. Thanks for the tip. I thought about using a brush, but didn't want the brush strokes. I will try it out though!

Good point Kenny. It does look good for a base coat! :) Gonna try the paint brush tonight.

And you're right. At least there is progress.

I actually got it at the Canadian equivalent, Princess Auto. It was on sale for $59. :) I just want to clean the backside of the engine and then my it will be on the stand.

UPDATE: Just waiting for some long bolts to get the engine on the stand. In the meantime, I've been working on the valve covers and transmission mounts. I took y'alls advice and painted the whole cover and then sanded off the paint from the ribs. Looks 100% better. Thanks again for that. I'll have a pic up of them tomorrow when they are dry.

One transmission mount was soaked, scrubbed, sanded and then painted. Here is a pic of the one painted and the other that still needs to be:

Hey Ron. I finally found this thread. If I were you, I would just paint the entire cam cover black and then sand the tops of the ridges with various grits of paper and a block. If you go high enough it will look almost polished.

EDIT: Just read your last post and you did just that. Reading comprehension > me. lol

Good to see you working on your project. I can't wait to see the car with the new engine in. I'm so glad it went to someone local so I can watch them enjoy it. That engine has always been more reliable than I ever expected. When I pulled the engine I also pulled the plugs. They were all perfect in colour and the cylinders all looked the same. (BHG in one cylinder will clean the piston top of all its carbon) Just one more thing I wanted to do to assure myself the engine was all that I know it to be.

It was a hard decision pulling this engine because of how well it was running. It takes a special kind of retard to rip apart a perfectly running car. Steve has it right, the car made 282 whp and 333 wtq. At the time it was at about 11 psi max. Since that dyno I had been running it around 13. The times stated are right too.

Here it is leaving its old home. I want a matching pic of it going in. Don't forget. ;)

wow, 188 RWHP, and I thought my 288 rwhp as low!

Nice rebuild you have going on here. Cleaning everything up. Nothing I  more then a nice clean engine bay! Your cam covers look some thing like this?

That turned out great Ron! Can't wait to see your valve covers! :)

Thanks Kenny. I think it'll need a couple more coats, but it should look good. Working with the flat black is testing my patients! :nono:

I was wondering where you were! :)

Thanks for chipping in. Like I said before, I know I got a great engine from someone who took meticulous care of it. Those numbers are great. If I can climb to that number, I would have gained 100HP. Not sure if I'm ready for that! :aigo:

I'll definitely get the pic of it going in my car. I'm trying to get as many pics as possible. I promise I won't forget!

LOL. I was very ashamed of it and that's why I started to look around for a replacement motor. It was either that or do a full rebuild, which I didn't have the money for! When Jamie's engine came up, it was a no brainer!

I had to clean things up. I'm not necessarily a neat freak, but it just makes sense to do it when I have access to everything.

My covers have the same colour scheme, but I used flat black instead of satin/gloss. Yours look great!

Well didn't get much done this week. Finally got the engine on the stand. Took a couple more mounts/stays off the block to clean. They are soaking right now.

As for the valve covers, I'm done (for now). I'm pleased with the outcome, but not 100% happy with them. In total, I've put about 9 coats of paint on them and they still could use a couple more in some places. Anyhow, I put them aside for now and if I have patience for them later on, I'll continue with them. If not, well, they'll be covered for the most part.

Here are some pics:

Here are the transmission and a couple other mounts that I painted. I'm happy with them.

The valve covers look much better now. Probably because of that base coat you put on earlier. ;)

Looking good Ron! Keep it up!

Love the keychain by the way! :)

EDIT: What is the piece in the upper right corner of the tranny brace pic? I don't remember seeing one of those in my 7M Journey.

Thanks Kenny. I just can't spend any more time to make them great. Maybe later! ;) The base coat definitely helped! Not sure if you can see, but there are smear marks and scratches. The smears are from me trying to wipe the paint off the ribs before it dried and the scratches from the sand paper. Both careless mistakes on my part, but whatever! :)

Yeah, I thought the keychain was pretty cool!

That piece I believe is for the a/c condenser. It is held on to the left side of the block with the same bolts that hold the trans mount. I'm not too sure though as the a/c was removed before I got the engine.

OK. Well if you look at the pic at the top of this page, you see it just below the starter. So I was completely wrong as it's not for the a/c. Now I'm stumped as to what it could be for.

I think that is the bracket that the engine damper is attached to. It is found at the back of the block on the drivers side.
