Supra Slapping

The noise popped its head up one day when I was speeding on the freeway. This whole thing has really confused the crap out of me.

I pulled up to a red light after I got off the freeway. I was sitting there, and then all of a sudden I heard a sputter and the car just died at idle. I checked my oil and it said I had none.

Which doesn't make sense at all because I just got doing an oil flush 2 weeks prior to that incident.

It can't be RK because the noise would be consistent with higher rpms, but its not. The noise goes on and off.

sometimes with rod knock the higher rpms can drown out the noise. an easy way to find out if it has rod knock is to remove the spark plug wire from the suspected cyclinder, the noise should go away.

but driving without oil can damage alot of stuff fast.

I realised that it could be possibly from having no oil, but thats what gets me.

I did a complete flush and I had sufficient oil. Where could it have gone?

That's why I'm thinkin maybe its the pump possibly.

What should the proper oil pressure be at idle?

well if you just did an oil change 2 weeks earlier and you were already out of oil, you're either burning a hell of alot of oil or have a bad leak somewhere.

viper thinks it could be a bhg

but i show no signs of that, no milk, no white smoke from my exhaust, none of that

if it was a bhg, what could be masking it, and why would i hear clankin from my head?

you're hearing noise b/c you drove it without oil, and something is probably messed up. did you check to see if theres any oil in the coolant?

I didn't see any oil in the coolant and there is no sign of milk.

It is a bit fustrating to look at it, becuase the previosu owner used red coolant, and i now use green. so it looks brown, but it doesnt have that spark that oil has when its mixed with water

Tomorrow, I'm gonna try and drain my oil into a clear container and see if it will separate, if it does, i guess i have bhg

but that still wont solve my head issue

LMFAO holy shit thats sig worthy!!

get the coolant flushed, your about to need a new radiator and coolant lines. Coolant isnt like cool aid, you cant mix colors/flavors and have it all taste good.

Just to make sure I have this insanity straight:

- You flushed the engine with (I assume) engine flush off the shelf at the parts store (you somehow thought this was a good idea?)
- The motor ran low on oil (for whatever reason)
- You've mixed Toyota Red with conventional green coolant without doing a coolant flush
- After you ran low on oil the noise started
:eek3:

- You've been driving it since you ran low on oil
:eek3dance

I want to remind some of the guys that have responded in this thread...this is the Tech Section. As such, if you don't know EXACTLY what you are talking about, DO NOT post. That is showing severely in a number of responses here. It will stop or I am going to start a public humiliation campaign.
IS THIS PERFECTLY CLEAR.

Whoa, no no no lol

I have not been driving my supra since the incident. In my previous post I said I did an oil flush and a coolant flush. I did not use any flushing products. And no I have not been driving my vehicle on low oil knowingly.

My engine was filled with the correct amount of oil. One day when I was driving, the vehicle over heated, I check the dipstick, it said I was low on oil. I don't know where the heck it went.

As for the mixing of coolants, I guess that's a mistake on my part, I thought I completely flushed out all the red

So explain to me how you flushed the engine?
How many quarts did you put in the motor after this "flush"?

When you say "low on oil", where on the dipstick did it show (if at all)?
And, how many quarts did you add to get it back to the full mark?

If this is how it sounds like.....
to answer your question.... you have a rod knock, just admit it, live with it and it will haunt you for a while. Rebuild the motor, or swap it out with a running motor.

Btw whats the mileage on your motor ?

I drained the oil, filled it back with 5quarts of synthetic, ran the engine for about 10 minutes, drained out the rest of the tar shit that was in there. Refilled it back with the correct amount of oil and called it a day.

The day it over heated and I checked the dipstick it showed there was no oil at all. I assumed I had a leak somwhere so I towed it home, filled it with the correct oil again, and started the car to hear that knock in the head.

I know it sounds like there could be a number of things going on here but I'm trying to learn so I can get to the bottom of this.

Ok...last time...filled with "correct amount of oil". How many quarts and where did it show on the dipstick?

Again...
How many quarts did you have to add to get the oil back to the full mark when it ran low?

I told you 5 quarts to get it at the full mark

The motor has 157,000 miles

As for those knocking videos, I would love to admit it was rod knock so I could have a reason to buy a new motor, but it sounds different. It doesn't increase like that. Kinda sounds like a clank/slap, but it can only be heard on the intake cam cover of the 5th piston.

Is it possible for RK to occur on one piston as opposed to multiple?
