Okay, so I don't want to sound like a complete n00b here, but this issue is buggin the sh*t out of me. For the past month I have been trying to diagnose what is going on with my supra.

The noise sounds sort of like a metal clanking. It's not rod knock. It only happens off and on at weird rpms. The noise is coming from the head. I've tried searching everywhere for this similar issue but no luck.

It sounds like it could be coming from my cams, somewhere on the head. The car runs fine, it was idling weak, but I replaced the spark plugs as I was inspecting the noise, and now the idle is fine, but I still have the noise.

I know it's coming from the head, becuase if you place your finger on top of the cam cover, maybe about the 2nd piston from the firewall, you can feel the vibration of the clack. I suppose I should use a stethoscope maybe.

Sorry for the long post, hope I gave enough information. If anyone could help me on this fiasco that would be splendid, :1zhelp:

Mine used to make the funny noises from around the cam cover @ about 2OOO rpm ...
So I loosened my distributor & held the throttle @ 2OOO rpm
<where it makes the chatter> & turned the distributor till it stopped
My timing was a bit off , But now its fine & runs real strong with plenty of power & no more chatter
I hope this helps

I checked the TSRM, I have a cam angle sensor.

How could I adjust that and fix the timing?

it works like a distributor....but instead of directly/physically adjusting timeing it adjust the computer signal...don't move it unless your timeing is off already!

You may need a valve adjustment and screwing with ignition timeing to cure a noise isn't the way to do things.

If my timing was horribly off I wouldn't want my pistons to destroy the valves.

I've had it happen to me before in another vehicle. My timing chain ripped and my pistons crushed my valves. Costed me $1000 dollars to have a shop fix it.

This time around for my supra, I wanna do things myself and make sure its all good

ignition timing and cam timing are two different things. ingnition timing tells the plugs when to fire, has nothing to do with the valves.

Thanks for clearing that up bmoss, I feel like a huge douche haha

So how could we go about adjusting our timing for our cams then?

or adjusting valves for that matter

supra cool- are you sure its not RK. you usually shouldnt have to adjust your cams. how long has the noise been going on?
