Some input on the Miata:

The Miata is a cool car and handles awesome stock. A friend of mine has a 95 M edition and looks clean but..it has been lowered, has sway bars, and a butterfly brace and it handles like it's on rails! The power is lacking but he's putting a SC on it next year. The fun thing about that car is that people think it is a clean looking car but don't expect the performance it puts out. (especially in twisties)

well as duane said,

the handle really well with the right suspension. I had a friend who had a 95 miata pure beast! it was equiped with HKS coilovers, sway bars, butterfly braces, strut bars and full polyurithan bushings and honestly when he had it at the lowest setting the car sat literally 2ins off the ground!. It was like a rollercoaster ride. His second season of autocross he was lacking power so his dad gave him a one off T4garrett turbo kit with a set of slicks the car was unstopable!!!

Wow I can't beleave how many miata fans are one here.

Well back to that one comment about me not doing any power mods what I meant by that is I'm not worrying about them for the time being because I have a good handling car and most likey I am not going to have to rip the motor out and spend big bucks on a rebuild plus all the upgrades for the parts that are hard to get unless the motors out(a one time out type deal)

well I thank every one for the imput and keep it coming This dosent mean that I'm out of the supra game cause I still have to clean my car up a bit and spend as much time with it till the spring. In the mean time if anybody knows anyone with a miata thats looking for a supra near me throw them my way so we could talk.

Thanks sm

Ok I think some people are misinformed here. The 90-94 miatas are IMHO the best. Being light cheap and a huge aftermarket support.

From my own experience I have a 91 ford escort gt sitting in my driveway I'm building for a friend of mine and it's not going to be slow. Now point in fact not really an attractive car (escort or miata) but this escort has a fully built 1.8 (1839cc same as 90-94 miata) and with 323 rods and wisecos it's able to handle 700-800hp. Name more 1.8s that can do that effeciently. We turn 8krpms (500 over stock) with mild cams. The shop car running a protege with our same setup with larger cams is at 590whp and steady 10 sec 1/4 miles. This has to be the strongest 4cyl I've seen for it's size next to a 2nd gen 4g63 2.0 (evo)

To this end it's a toss up. If you can handle the cost and deal with all the miata weirdos in stock form but are hooked on time attack racing and like the miata in general, go for it.

I'm voting supra though. :)

Miatas aren't gay.

I know miatas that will walk a lot of supras in a straight line. On the auto x course, the miata rules.

Make sure your driver mod stays in tip top shape though.

Have you ever seen a miata on Tein Circuit Specs with 4 inch flares, 13 inch watanabes, a hardtop, cage, and 13b swap? Not gay.

Drive a miata with just racing beat springs and it already feels like it will take any corner at any speed.

Go with the mazda dude.

/didn't read whole thread btw, just first couple posts

91 miatas ftw. I recently finished doing the 1.8 swap into my 91. Awaiting JIC MagicLs and some paint. Zoom zoom zoom

Be careful getting a '90 or early '91 miata... they were cursed with the short nosed crank. The SNC to the miata is what the BHG is to the MKIII, luckily it only affects ~1.5 years of production. Basically the keyway for the crank pulley was designed too short, and had a very good chance of wearing out, causing your pulley to wobble and eventually snap off the front of your crankshaft.

If you want a track car... Miata all day long is my vote. I love the supra, but it will never contend with a well setup miata on the track.

The best miata setup is early 1.6 car < 93 with the 94/95 1.8 motor or even a later engine if you work around the OBD II setup using the OBD I EMS... The early 1.6 cars were the lighest of the bunch and also had a 4.3 rear gear where as the 1.8 cars had a 4.1 but the then you bring in the whole LSD problem cause the early cars didn't have one but the late cars did. But LSD problem is easy to solve. 1st gen RX7 LSD fit, they are pretty cheap and easy to come by...

If you want power, turbo it and your done.. Cheap and you end up with a pretty damn fast car... I built one several years ago... Grand total was just over $5000 and that included buying the car, doing a complete suspension build up, doing the the 1.8 engine swap and building a custom turbo setup for it (also included a LINK EMS) at 10psi, the car made 248 rwhp and ran consistant 12.6's in the 1/4 and would whip up on pretty much anything on a road course (spent many weekend on Sebring Inter. Raceway embarising Vipers, Vettes, Porsche's and Ferrari's) All for $5000 too....

how about I get a 600rr and kick all of your asses on the track! how does that sound? :naughty:

lol, I've seen Miatas kick ass over bikes on a track and they were 600's. ;) The right set-up a Miata is VERY hard to beat. You need to get in one that is set up for track use/street use. (if you haven't already.

WOW this one post make me think so diffrent about keeping the supra.I mean even Tho you guys have been saying to get a miata I think this morning I was really leaning towerd the supra but hearing what you have to say about the miata and what you got for 5g's makes me want to get one so bad now.The best part is that I could belive every single word or it.5 grand is the stock rebuild on the 7M with all the mods I want(nothing crazy)I don't know gang.I might just do it now.

Thanks cjsupra90 and the rest of miatamania for making me think diffrentley. But theres still time and I still might keep the old tank and hey I don't want to hear that miata's are a better road race car cause I know with the right knowledge, wallet, weight, and driver that a supra could kick a miata's ass on a large course.
