So i got this for a pretty good deal, there were reciepts and everything. When i got the car everything was fine, but than i let one of my friends test drive it, he made sharp ass u turn and my wheels spun out and we basically drifted sideways left to right and he was about to crash my fcking brand amazing ass supra into the pole but he got control again. than after maybe about 10 mins i started hearing a rattling noise everytime you past about 3000 rpm. So i brought the car back to my house and reved the engine and it sounds horrible, before 3000 its fine but after than its just a bunch of rattling. CAN anybody tell me what this is? Possible when he spun out my wheels he couldve snaped something or possible made something loose? I was going to take it to the shop but i dont want them telling me a bunch of bullshit so i wanted to see if anyone on here had the same problem as i. thanks

Simple stuff first; check all the external stuff bolted to/near the motor.

example: I had a horrible rattle that scared the shit out of me, I thought it was something in the motor that let loose. Much to my relief, it turned out to be a loose heat shield vibrating and making a terrible racket.

If it makes the noise while you are just sitting still and reving it, then listen to see if it is coming from the engine area or somewhere else on the car. Just like Rennat, I don't want to say it's Rod Knock, but your description does sound somewhat similar to it. Try to narrow down where the noise is coming from, top or bottom of engine or not the engine at all.

Maybe he unported the suction screen during that little fiasco. If so that would not be good...

Meaning the oil pump pick-up tube = loss of oil flow to the motor.

I'm thinking you need to be more careful about letting "friends" drive the car. You don't need friends like that.

ahhhh i get it 'unported' = no longer submerged. yeah... but wouldnt he have to had like 4qts in there? cause if its full it shouldnt become open could it? i used to do a lot of 'spirited' driving around town, and even up the back roads in the mountains, and i've never had a problem with anything except traction. haha... but i also ran 6qts...

well i made sure all oil and fluids are there and everything seems to be fine. if it is a rod knock im going to be mad. i was at work all day so i didnt have a chance to really get some answers on my car. people is telling me that i should just get a new engine instead of trying to get the rod bearings fixed. what do you guys think

With the stock 5 quarts of oil in the car, under hard cornering and/or braking, ertain parts of the engine and oiling system are deprived of oil.

Running an extra quart or two (I run two over) will not harm anything on the motor (no oil seals), and won't rob any horsepower, as the crankshaft doesn't dip into the oil pan. It will give you more than enough oil to save your ass under hard braking and cornering, where the engine needs a good lube system the most.

Sorry to hear this happened =\

Well, first I'd make sure that it is a rod knock (supracentral has a thread somewhere on how to detect rod knock). If it is rod knock than you'll have to look at the rod journals and make a decision on the damage.

In short if your rod journals are damaged than new rod bearings aren't going to last very long, and you might as well bite the bullet and have the crank machined and do over size bearings to match. If you go the band-aid route and just do the rod bearings, your knock will return shortly.

most of the time the bearings are softer than the crank, so you end up beating the bearing onto the crank, and it should be able to be cleaned up.

wasnt the easiest way to tell if you had rod knock was to pull the lead wire to each cylinder while its running and rev it?
