Ok, so 'superchips' are outta the question. What kind of piggy-back or stand alone unit are we talk'n about? ($?)

If your looking for instant HP, it doesnt exist.
If your looking to tune, the first order of business is a wideband 02 sensor, with a gauge to monitor your Air fuel ratios, then you need fuel management to make corrections. Stand-alone is most likely too pricy for you, you will probably want a piggy back such as Apexi AFC or MAFT pro. I like MAFT pro because you can ditch the restrictive MAF sensor. Suprasport.com offers a package which incudes a wideband o2 for like $750 Tuning AFR's is serious busines as errors can kill an engine. Not to insult you but the fact that your asking this means you arent ready to tune. so either hit the books and study hard or find a reputable shop that can do it for you, but dont just try to "wing it" because the results can be catastrophic.
Plan to spend $500-$1000 to get set up, plus more if you need an AFPR (adjustable fuel pressure regulator) plus labor to install and tune. If your chasing big numbers you may need larger injectors, and a new fuel pump down the line.

Reprogrammed ecus have daughter boards in all cases iirc. You can find them around from time to time but expect to pay a good bit for them.
