Man, tonight I was riding my bike back from the mini-mart down the street, and I got to hear a Subie close-up from a stop at a light. I don't know what it was exactly [WRX I am pretty sure] It seriously confirmed what I thought I had heard all along - they sound BAD! That's bad, as in NOT GOOD. Seriously, their engines sound like they make a popping noise which is reminiscent of the Fisher-Price popcorn popper from my childhood. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I the only one? If you happen to be near one, listen up for it and I am sure you will hear what I am talking about.

H O motors.. just like an i-6 sounds diff than a V6, and rotoraries are the bastard child of exhaust notes.

I think they sound pretty unique, too. They do have kind of a funny raspy sound to them, but that's just Subaru's thing, I guess. I've heard a WRX with an equal-length exhaust manifold on it and it sounded a lot different than usual. The owner was only driving away normally, but I didn't like it as much.

NA rotaries are bad, but NA performance-pretending inline-4 cylinders are the worst.

Yeah the horizontally opposed four has a characteristic sound. The VW also had that sound, just not as powerful as the Scooby. The VW’s tweet sound that was engineered deliberately, The exhaust tips had to be correct length to make the sound. The sound of a engine seems to be based not only on layout i.e I4, V4(early SAAB 96) , H4 , I6, V6 and so on but also on firing order , ex V8 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 or 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 and finally 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 There is a Subaru STI that drives by every day with a BIG turbo and accompanying blow off sound that is music to my ears.

I hate the way all subaru's sound eith exaust... of any kind.. seriously SHITTY!
my buddy has a 97 legacy GT and it sounds like utter crap, deep exaust note with little "wob" sounds out of nowhere like it has a cam but it dont and its not studdering or anything cause every subaru ive heard has them.

I like my exaust note on My 2 cars... my Mustang ... Long tube headers X pipe 3" with dumps... so sexy woo! my GTP has headers and downpipe and you cant hear the exaust over the Supercharger scream. And the supra sounds good but right now has the exaust cut off and it sounds like a boat outta water haha.

call me old fashioned, but nothing beats hearing a 396 with a blower perched on top sporting 2 950 dominator carbs... going thru 2 3 inch lines to magnaflow race mufflers... the damn thing makes more torque at idle that my car car does at full sing... and it lets you know... hearing it open up to 5k is just as thrilling..and somewhat frightening...

but as ck said..its hard to beat the sound of an i6, the perfect balancing and the firing order make for a great tone.
