One of my struts is starting to go out, i can hear it knock when i hit bumps, so i plan on doing a new suspenshion. I cant afford coil overs at all so im trying to debate what setup to go with. Tokico struts, Bilstein struts, Koni struts are a bit expensive. But then what springs? Eibach springs, ST Springs, what? Anybody got any input? Its a daily driver and i want to stiffen it up, but not make it uncomfortable, its non tems, and yea... Any input would be nice.

If it's knocking then most likely something is loose. Worn struts give you that Caddy float feeling.

If you are going to replace them and are even thinking about coilovers, then go coilover. It doesn't cost that much more than a proper replacement strut/spring set with new uppers/bump stops.

you can find CRAPPY coilovers for less than 1000 shipped

Fixed. I have never found any decent coilover for under $1000. There are a few right over a $1000 though like Stance and Tein. To save money with a decent ride I would go Bilstine or Koni on Eibach or H&R.

I just dont really have the money for coil overs. I make 10$ an hour, 30hrs a week. It takes a lotta time to save up. I was just thinking Tokicos or Koni shocks/struts whatever with eibach springs. Should be less than 600$ or around. I just cant really to afford to double how much i was looking at spending on a suspenshion. I can always get coil-overs later if i keep the car that long.

I would personally get a good spring and shock combo over a cheap coilover set up. A cheaper coilover always rides like crap. They have stiff spring rates to make up for the lack of valving. Once you sit in a car with a good set up you will understand the difference.

Coil overs - 1500 $ give or take
shocks springs - about 600$ for everything.
Yea.....

Does the $600 include new upper mounts and new bump stops?

~$350-$450 for decent struts
~$250-$300 for springs
~$100 for new hardware (upper mounts/boots)
-------------------
$750 give or take

Coilovers would include better upper mounts, be height adjustable, and cost ~$400 more (50% more). I've seen several sets in the $800 range that would only be ~$50 more.

ed: As far as your original question though, if you can't wait an extra month to save the $$$ for coilovers, Tokico Blue/B&G springs/KYB upper mounts & bump stops

I was actually going to just re-use the stock mounts, if thats possible.

and on the edit: if i got coil-overs id get tein ss's and they reuse the stock mounts.

I got my KYB GR-2's for around $195, all 4. I already had the Eibach springs laying around though. Havn't had a chance to install em yet, but I've heard they do their job fine. I had TEMS, but these deleted em.. I think the stock mounts were reused when assembling everything, but idk.

So struts @ ~$200, springs should be ~$200. Looking at around ~$400-$500 in costs for new struts and springs..

I bought my tokico illumina II used had low miles (30K miles) only paid $50 for them (all four one is blown though but still good buy) through a friend, H&R springs cost me $220 shipped so all in all including another replacement shock its costing me $370 for everything. The Shock and Spring route is def. cheaper.

QFT. Find the knock sound, it's likely to fix your problem at a cost of 10 minutes with a wrench instead of hundreds of $$$.

If your shocks are blown, you'll be able to bounce that corner of the car and it won't stop bouncing. Ok, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it will bounce more than once after you stop pushing it.

Bingo.

Even if everything is tight, it's probably just a mount.

^^ mostly likely what you are hearing is dead top mounts. They go for 47 a pop at the dealer. Your shocks/springs are probably fine. You should just replace the top mounts if you are on a budget and not trying to upgrade anything also just keep the stockers for a bit longer as they are working fine.

If it is my mount, how would i determine its that and not the shock without pulling it out? Even after that, only way i know how to test the strut/shock whatever u wanna call it is by seeing if you can push it in by hand, or how much force it takes. But yeah, how do i test my strut mounts?

EDIT: And ive come down to using Eibach springs (If i have to do a suspenshion), but cant decide on Tokico Blues or GR-2's. Any input guys? Ill try and narrow this down a little more when i get some time. Hopefully this weekend. And yeah if it is only my top mounts, then ill def. postpone this till i can afford some nice coil-overs.
