The original question is for max hp of a stock motor with only a MHG. That means that no forged internals and no head work can be done. Therefore it would appear some of the people being hated on would be correct with their 400-500whp numbers.

I have not heard of more power than that with everything in the long block being stock other than a mhg.

Properly tuned and with reasonable power goals for the amount the motor has been built up, the 7m is a very strong and reliable motor.

Did you ignore the rest of the thread and especially the video? That car doesn't have forged internals!

Street tune is fine to get to the dyno. If you spend 10's of thousands of dollars on the motor why be a cheap ass and do all the tuning yourself? Keep in mind there is actually school for tuners.

The OEM's spend millions tuning the ECU for all conditions, don't think you can do the same for nothing, especially on a big dollar build!

im regurgitating here... forged will stand up to detonation better then stock pistons. That said forged will give you more room for error to get things dialed in. Other wise stock- forged, the motor knows no difference and its up to you to keep things safe for a DD tune.

You WILL destroy forged internals if you think its the key to upping the boost and running more aggressive tunes. The same rules apply just that one will take more abuse before checking out.

I do have a question though. Do the stock pistons usually fail strictly because of heat or detonation? Or have they been known to break even under a good proper tune at 450-500hp? Just wondering if I could get away with a little water/methanol and 94 octane pump gas at 18 psi, to get me around 450hp (after checking for knock and tune at the dyno)
Essentially, yes, they usually fail due to one of these. Every stock piston I've blown up, or seen blown up, could be easily attributed to one or the other.
