Starting a New Leaf, and my foray into Turboland; where do I begin?

Alright boys, here's the scoop. I'm in the process of purchasing a beautiful 1987 Turbo model Supra. The car is OEM stock, right down to the cheesy tape deck and 22 year old rusting exhaust. The car has roughly 130K on it, but I have faith in the engine since it's a (documented:biglaugh:) Toyota reman'd engine installed around 100k since the previous owner's mechanic didn't know how to fix BHG and ended up fucking the OG motor's head.

The CT26 pulls strong and hard, even at low RPM's.

The car is more powerful than my old Supra (Alpha Werefox's current car) - even through it's A340E.

This car is so mine.

But I know - I know I can do more. The thing is, I've never dealed with turbos before. I'm trying to seek as much power as I can without raising the boost too much; where would I begin?

And ultimately, what kind of horsepower can I expect out of the 7M-GTE through 'supporting' engine mods that don't require replacing the turbine or cracking open the head/block?

It's *possible* to push upwards of 500rwhp through a stock block / head, however, you're well into crazy upgrades by the time you get there - meth injection kits, much larger turbo / IC setups, aftermarket standalone ECUs, this kind of thing.

And your stock Auto won't make it that far, that's pretty much a given.

Read the threads on upgrade stages for the 7M, there's a couple of them, they're mostly adapted from the old list published by HKS back in the 80s. Once you're though those, you'll have a much better idea, then you can start digging into the tech that's been released since, like MAFTs.

Yay, so 350 RWHP isn't too difficult to achieve? =o

That's pretty much all I care to make. I'll worry about more power when I can afford a 4L60E. I heard those can handle up to 600 wheel-horsepower, and that's pretty much the upper limit of what this car will ever see.

Any more, and I imagine twisting the chassis becomes a genuine concern... correct?

Still. 350 RWHP is my goal for now and probably the next year and a half. <3 I'm content with 'that little'... lol.

We have cars pushing ~900 rwhp without chassis issues. You can rest easy there.

350 is pretty easy to achieve, at least through the manual. Not a lot of people stick with the auto, so reliable information will be harder to find on that setup.

Well, how involved is an R154 swap, anyways?

Or the Getrag, for that matter?:hs:

I know Getrags are about as durable as rock crushers (Muncie M20 baby :3) but ierno, it might be overkill.

Besides, doesn't the Getrag have an even shorter 6th gear than the Supra's already laughably low gearing? <.<

not to be an ass but this forum has a great search feature. all of your questions can easily be found in previous discussions among the forums. as you can already see we have generous members, but we also have some that will flame you, so beware. just have a look around the forum and you may stumble upon your answers. with that said, ill answer your questions:

many members have documented their auto-manual swaps. you will need a drive shaft suited for a r154 and well as the clutch setup. there is also some rewiring involved. as for the getrag, go for it you want, but most will stick with the r154 as they are cheap (but getting harder to get a hold of) and hold a decent amount of power, depending on the condition of course. most of the cars with higher power have switched to an auto setup. the getrag is longer and probably a greater girth so you will need to do some fab work

Well, my heart will always be with the Z31, but god damn does the VG30ET suck balls:biglaugh:

I guess I only hated the issues my old car had, not the A70 itself.

Starter won't matter if you BHG ;) a head retorgue doesn't take long and t a major comfert :)

<.< Mind if I ask just what's involved?

*glances down at the TSRM sitting in his lap, which came with the car*

I'm sure this might help, too.

Actually... I WANT to switch to an HKS MG right now. Can I? Or is there something that needs to be done in advance?

What TBC said if you want to use a MHG youll pretty much have to remove the engine, to have both mating surfaces decked.

If you have the TSRM itll be pretty simple its step by step, just dont go by the 58ft lb rating that Toyota has in there. I took my stock bolts to 72ft lbs and my ARP's are at 75.
