Whilst looking for various faults on my car i came across this pipe

p927230_1.jpg

it goes under the alternator, and joins between 2 thin metal pipes. this then again goes back into a rubber pipe that goes into the intake manifold. crankcase breather?? im not too sure myself

when i found this i wondered if it would be one of the causes of my high idle speeds? also are the other varios pipes in the engine the same size? like the pipe for the pas idle up? as i supose i could replace them all at the same time. and can i just get this sort of pipe from an auto parts sort of shop?

heres a piccy i took after a 5 mile drive the other night to show the high idle and low temp gauge ive been experiencing recently

incidentaly this is a piccy from a cold start. not too sure what with the cold wether lately but is this a touch smokey?

If the car won't reach operating temp its probably a stuck thermostat. That will also keep the idle high because the ECU will stay in warm up mode. Your fuel efficiency should be awful as well.

yeah fuel efficiency is almost half what it used to be.

Im gonna replace the split hose first. Today i bought 3 new drive belts so when i fit them i may aswell drain the coolant and fit the new stat i bought and check out the water pump aswell. Then fit the new spark plugs.

From your description the hose is probably part of the power steering idle up circuit. A leak there would trend to raise the idle speed, but won't affect the operating temperature.

yeah, thats gonna be a seperate fault i should think. The pipe in the picture was removed from a metal pipe that runs behind all the pulleys on the front of the engine. not too sure where it runs to just now though. bit dark to tell.

out of interest what are all the int diameter sizes of these hoses? the one i just fitted #17343 was a 5 mm int diameter. Id be interested in swaping them for silicone hoses probably in blue. but theres a few different sizes there by the looks of it
