Okay so I'm going to at least start this off in a very graphical manner.
intro.jpg

Brief History: Rebuilt 7M head, 20mi later rodknock, but i was sure i had flushed the motor. turns out a nut had come off the #6 cyl rod and that was that. Well sick and tired of BHG's (not really, had MHG forever), but def sick of a leaky seal, that damn across the top intake pipe, and the 7M's general bastardness. I broke down the costs between doing a complete 7M rebuild, or swapping a 1J. With a difference of only a few hundred dollars, I decided to go with the 1JZ. Here is the story....

I had to work my ass off and not buy shit so i could afford it.

Obviously.

Now onto something interesting
:boobies: you guys are such pervs

I didn't want to start this thread until I got the motor and checked it out, as I wanted to make sure I didn't get fucked. After talking wtih the osaka guys (well, trying to understand wtf they were saying), and doing a bunch of research, I decided to take a slight risk and go with them. I was very specific that it was to be a rear sump car, with an uncut harness. They said you bet. A week later UPS gave me a call wanting to schedule delivery. More on this later.

As I was dissassembling the 7M, i looked at my HPF 6puk clutch disk. Shit, the pads were almost all gone. Another bunch of monies I had to spend. Along with some other items that you'll see later, the delivery schedule was frickin brilliant, it was like I was a jew- i had a whole week of presents.

monday.jpg

(sorry i forgot to take a pic before i got to installing it)

tuesday.jpg

got a great deal from CKAnderson, thanks!

wednesday.jpg

Drewgo's friend Smiley sold me the Ypipe, great deal, perfect condition

thursday.jpg

Ordered from Dan @ Ulitmate collision (found through NASIOC). Fast shipping, but he forgot my freakin gauge cup. Bastard. But he did refund the cost within 20min of my email.

friday.jpg

Now the story on the delivery. Yesterday I got the call to setup a delivery time. We setup between 1-5pm, and I took off work accordingly. Well, 5:30 rolls around and nothing, so I give them a call. "Yea, sorry today's been crazy. Its on a truck, ready to go, we're just waiting for a driver. I'll call you back as soon as its leaving, you'll definitely get it tonight." UGH took 3 hours off work for nothing. So I go out to buy some relay's for wiring up the gauges when I get a call. "Hey, the driver left 10 minutes ago. ONe thing, i see that your shipping order has a lift gate for delivery. The truck doesn't. Do you have any way of getting it off?" "Uh how high is the back of the semi?" "4-5 feet" "Shit. Okay yea I'll figure something out." LUCKILY my engine hoist, at its highest setting worked, barely. 8pm the motor arrives, its the only thing in the truck! Thats one thing I like about UPS... if they've got something to deliver, it gets delivered!.

Now I was really anxious- I immediately checked the sump- rear. Awesome. Checked the wiring harness, uncut. Awesome. Checked condition of pipes, electronics, etc- just dandy. Awesome. Awesome+Awesome+Awesome = Giddy Timmy. I hopped around for a few minutes on my broken ankle and then go to work of bringing it inside. Upon some further inspection, I found some things:

omgwtf.jpg

how dare they. I'm disputing charges, its fucking missing a bolt.

ohnoes.jpg

oil's going to come squirting out of there! Disputing charges on this too.

wirewhere.jpg

But seriously, where do these wires go? *shrug* For being the only cut wires, not bad!

So far I've bought almost brand freakin new motor mounts froom KWNate, clutch disk from CKAnderson, PS Resevoir from someone else who I can't remember, and the exhaust from Drewgo's friend. All very pleasant transactions, thanks guys. All I have left to get is some more piping for intake, Bellhousing and flywheel which I'll be picking up from RRev next weekend. Even though their customer service left quite a bit to be desired, as long as you're very clear with what you want, Osaka delivers. I couldn't be more pleased with this engine.

With that, chapter one comes to a close. Chapter two will include Prosports in the cluster, IC mounting, and probably y-pipe installation, as well as a crapload of wiring.

It's all good, luckily they only cut off one of the most important parts of the whole harness. :nono: I had to fix that same thing on Mattjk's car, it's not too bad, but there were several wires of the same color and gauge, so it was more time consuming then it looked like it would be. You have to go one at a time and verify you are connecting everything correctly at the other end where it terminates. If you get the connectors off of a Soarer harness, the colors are completely different.

I just sent them an email and left a phone message, hopefully we can get this sorted out. I don't mind extending the wires at all, but I do really fucking mind not having the fucking ignitor after i was VERY clear I would not purchase the motor unless it came with one, and was reassured that it did both verbally and in writing.

But for now, time to yank off the tranny, and do some basic cleanup.

Oh and aaron, whats an easy way to check to see if its a soarer harness or a supra one? I was told it came out of a supra, but grrr I'd like to double check.

Just another example of how some importers will lie through their teeth until the engine gets to your house. What are you going to do, pay to ship it back?

If the engine has a hydrofan on it, then it's not from a Soarer. It's hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like it's from a Supra.

well I wouldn't call it lying through their teeth. I'm all about low expectations, so IMO only getting fucked on one thing isn't bad. Yea, its hydrofan, so i guess its a supra motor, neato. How does one go about deleting the hydrofan unit? I'm going to be using my e-fans, so don't really need that.

Took the twins off today to install the y-pipe... wasn't that aweful. I can see how it would be unbelievably shitty if you were doing it with the motor in the car, but out of the car it took about 10min. One of the flange holes on the y-pipe was off by barely .5mm, so I had to mill it out to make it fit.. grrrrrrr. Luckily the other side went on just fine. I got the gauge cluster trimmed so the gauges will fit, and a little bit of trimming done on the brackets... I think thats about it. Pics coming later tonight.

ok, sorry for not catching this earlier - fonts:

the weekdays are Fuck You Las Vegas
the captions are PhontPreak's Handwriting

Today: finished rewiring the alarm so it'll work properly now, took off AC pump, almost finished with the ypipe, and a bunch of other misc stuff. next big step is dealing with the hydrofan, and then drop it in to start test fitting wires, hoses, etc. Oh yea, and try and resolve the whole lack of ignitor issue. Onto the pics:

Did a thorough inspection of the ecu side of the harness, found two broken wires and a few potential breaks. took off allll the old crappy electrical tape stripped em, soldered, and then heatshrinked.
bad+wires+2.jpg

rewrapped.jpg

after the car is running, next time the car is down for upgrades, the elec tap is coming off again and its all getting wrapped in techflex.

Started in mounting the gauges, trimmed the brackets, then put some kittyhair on the mounts to get them stabilized, and then used epoxy to secure it all together. The gauges are protuding a little bit too much right now. I'll keep them like this to get everything hooked up and working, then move back the gauges a little bit.

oh yea, btw these things look awesome when lit. The oil pres gauge when powered on would rocket up to the max reading and stay there while the two temp gauges would slowly do their sweep. sent prosport an email, later that morning got a response, and that type of action is normal. Great communication from those guys!

Oh yea, have an ignitor on the way. if anyone else has ANY worries about buying a motor, get everything in writing. I presented them with the emails I had, and they're shipping me one tomorrow. Only downside is it doesn't have the connector, so i gotta swing by the dealership and get the plugs, then terminate it myself. A bit of a hassle, but no biggy.

Ok, this post is me asking questions.

#1) I don't know how i missed this the first time, but found 3 more wires with no connector:
unknown+wires.jpg

Whats that to?

#2) edit: answered my own question

#3) How the bloody hell do you get this motor mount off?!?! It doesn't look like it needs replacing however, but I'd still rather put on the new mount.

Hey nice good luck with the swap , it's well worth the effort !!

You better give them another call it looks like your missing the map sensor as well :nono:

excuse the zip tie , this was just after install and yes that's right I didn't extend my harness but it's a MKII so you may or may not have the room for this option.. hope it all works out for ya !!

Cock. Well I'm pretty pissed about the ignitor and MAP sensor, but for the overall amount of money I paid, i guess I can't whine THAT much. Anyway, ignitor and map sensors are on the way, then i gotta swing by the dealership to buy plugs and pins. Anyway onto progress:

- Hood is painted flat black for the time being. Its not perfect, theres still some scratches, the paint is a little uneven but not worrying about it too much, the whole car is getting a new paint job in a few months so for now as long as its somewhat decent. Nose peice and front bumper are next. Sorry no pix as of yet.

- Gauge cluster is finished. Had to do quite a bit of cutting to get the prosports to fit... I'm not a big fan of their mounting brackets, autometer's are much much much better, but hey what can ya do. They're damn sexy though, +12v gets you this dark red, 12v + orange wire gets you amber (kinda orangish), and 12v + white wire gives you white. I'm still waiting for my dash LEDs to get it so I can decide on how i'll want it to light up, but I'll probably stick with red on power, white on acc, and then amber when the lights turn on. I'll wire up the dash side of the harness tomorrow probably. Pics:
finished+cluster.jpg

cluster+rear.jpg

oh yea, I'll show you later how i'm dealing with keeping the rest of the dash functional....
gauges+back.jpg

red (sorry for flash, i'll get better pix later):
prosportsred.jpg

white:
prosportswhite.jpg

amber:
prosports+amber.jpg

- the harness is a little closer to being extended 18". Right now I'm dealing with all the wires that needed shielding.. takes some time. I'll have a dedicated post in a few days on how to efficiently and easily extend the harness :)

thats it for the time being

those 3 wire go to the O2 sensor on the exhaust behind the turbos..
