There's a lot of discussion on this topic, but I'd like some numbers to help me decide whether to go ahead with the mod when I do my 5 speed swap. If you've done this mod, let me know if you love it or hate it. Please, no voting if you don't have first hand experience with it.

I haven't done it but I have driven cars with it. Hated it. The shifter is already at the perfect height for me. Any lower makes me reach too much. I prefer a REAL short shifter, like the C's, over the shortened sogi shifter any day.

A lot of people do it because they perceive the shifter as being super long when it's really not... The way the console dips down just makes it look like that.

If you love taking shortcuts and doing hack work on your pride and joy then go for it.

I hacked a shifter for a friend and drove it. I chose to leave mine stock over butchering my own Supra like that.

If you feel the need to change the shifter then spend a few $$ and get the C's or the shifter the SupraSport sells. You will NOT regret it!

I shifted a C's and bought the shifter from SupraSport. Both ROCK! The shifter from SupraSport is made in the USA by a Supra owner - not just some huge corp that doesn't care about the little guy. Who would you rather support? Why would you spend $370 + shipping for the C's when you can get the one from SupraSport for $285 + shipping?

heh. i love it.

yup, i run the SOGI short shifter. because i like hack-jobbing stuff? nope. because i like running what WORKS.

i RACE my car. i used a c's and a cut down c's for a bit, too bad it caused me to frequently miss shifts. for my use, missed shifts are NOT acceptable. the SOGI short shift mod, as ghetto as it may be, hasn't caused any missed shifts yet. the real issue here is the age/design of our transmissions....

are the c's (and others) short shifters sweet for daily driving? you bet. just be prepared to be let down when you ask it to shift quickly....

I would love to go with a real short shifter, but I'm in more than $2,500 this month alone, and I've GOT to start reeling in my costs. Another $300 for a luxury option, just isn't an option right now.

Poll seems to be showing the even split I was afraid of, but the nay-sayers seem to feel pretty strongly about it. I'm still on the fence, so we will need to see how things progress.

Thanks everybody for your input so far.

EDIT: Mattjk - I don't see the pic you're referring to in your thread....???

I did the SOGI mod on my 86.5 and wish I never did. It was notchy, and made a horrible whine and grinding noises. Secondly, I could never get any shift knobs to stay on for very long. no matter how tight I made them, within a few days they would come loose again.

I would never do it again, and left my 89 alone.

Anyone know the specs on this bushing and/or where to get them? I figured I would give it a try since my Sogi mod is very notchy.

I like the look of it but it isn't as easy as the stock longer shifter.

nvm on the truck bushing - search is your friend !

Chris, Call Champion and ask for the Green Truck bushing. Simple as that.

Ive driven an NA with the SOGI mod. DIddnt like it much. It jus diddnt feel right. It is shorter but The reach as Joe said was what I diddn't enjoy. Ill take a C's or wait for Nash to finish his

So the main problems & fixes are:

1. Problem - long reach. Fix - ease up on the seat recline (not a problem for me)

2. Problem - notchy shifting. Fix - new green bushings

3. Any Others?

It may nt be the seat recline... I drive almost straight up and down and very close to the wheel. Im also 6'8" tall so you can imagine the reach of my arms. To me, It just wasnt comfortable.

Well that changes things a bit. I'm only 5' 10", and I like my seat back, sitting upright, and the wheel kind of close with the telescope. Sounds like a good way to have to stretch for the shifter...
