I have wanted a Supra for as long as I can remember and now I have a chance to get one... Its an 86 with 188k miles on it... New head gasket, fuel pump, spark plugs, spark plug wires... Just needs some cosmetic TLC...
I'm a car enthusiast but I've never had a toyota and I don't really know the shelf life of toyotas... especially the supra... can someone please tell me if 188k is to much or just beginning or what...?

Thx!

Shelf life to me means parked in a garage?? In that case, it should not matter if it is turbo or not. I use my car almost daily. I put about 15k a year on it and I have 162k on it now. I would not be suprised to see it go another 100k on the motor and on the chassis? Check back in 25 yrs?? lol I have no idea?

Who here has the most miles on there supra now?

well i'm putting almost 3000 miles a month on mine because i drive so far to work every day, thats why i'm not doing any speed mods, just wanting to do handling mods....already have a car that is putting almost 400HP to the wheels and gets 8mpg, don't need another one....

thats just the start IF the car was well taken care of. as far as mileage that would be how well the motor was taken care of. Suprisingly everything else but motor will last for a very long time.
I'm with you

My Supra has 200,475 miles...bought it with 199,987 about 6 months ago, has been driven very little, obviously, because it has been under constant repair. lol.

The Engine has been completely rebuilt, and turbo replaced with a JDM one, as far as the chassis, right now it needs: A driver's side wheel bearing (and shock?), paint, p/s pump?, targa seals, taillight gaskets, wiring harness is SHOT and falling apart...and probably some other things I forgot to mention...

Work that I have done since purchase:
-Head Gasket replaced
-New Starter
-Head rebuilt & shimmed
-replaced lots of hoses (Accordian, CSI, etc...)
-Speedo Cable Repair
-Blah Blah Blah... I don't remember everything, but there are a lot of little things too...

Was the Head gasket replaced with a metal one? Or with ARP studs? Because if it wasn't, then you can probably expect a BHG at some point in the future...Start saving up!!

If you buy the car with 188k miles on it, it will probably start having issues at 188,001 miles. LOL People usually don't sell Supras unless they have early bhg symptoms or some other expensive repair needed soon. OR, they did some expensive repairs and it still has problems.

If your wire harness is shot thats a big one right there. I had all sorts of little problems and random stalls and codes with my old one since the guy before me sliced into the harness and didn’t solder the wires or used heat shrink wire tape.

I got lucky and bought a new engine wire harness like two months ago (they just stopped making them for the 90-92) and haven’t had an electrical problem yet. When you start the car pop the hood and start shaking wires, if you notice that it stalls or throws a code ask him to drop the price since its going to be hard to replace it.

The guy who is selling the Supra is a car enthusiast as well but he needs the money too... We both checked just about everything... and we checked the harness too... It starts, new hg, new head, spark plugs, sp wires, fuel pump etc... Electrically the car is sound

122k original miles original HG, bulletproof 7mgte, as my friend from the mountains says it runs like a scaulded dog. Is setup for 9 PSI boost with MBC, Custom 3" exhaust and K&N FIPK. Wouldn't be afraid to drive it anywhere, well i hate going to the gas station these days but other than that I love my supra, and i love when people compliment me on it =]

I'd say your pretty good considering when I bought mine the car had about 220,000 miles on the body and the only thing I know of that was replaced was suspension, fuel pump and of course the usual stuff like intake filter, fuel filter ect...

He blew the motor though so it has like 80,000.

bro. realize that your habits dictate the length or your cars life.

I bought my supe dec 2005. I never owned any toyos before.
I kept my z31 because it went 275k before the engine was replaced (it was still running when i pulled it).

the z31 is a really cool car-but more people luv the supra.

@251k I see metal shavings in the oil, but it still runs so smooth.
this car was beaten relentlessly before i bought it. I was offered $4500 for my rundown supe yesterday.

as you all know rebuilds are gonna be necessary. you dont have try n make it last forever-
plan on downtime and get upgrades or rebuilds.

and if you can fabricate- woohooooooo!

your head will spin from all the options, all the custom aftermarket...

PS-

booooooooooooost for life.

my 89 i got from a buddy and it shows 133k on the clock. problem is that its had no spedo for about 3 years.im gonna say that it has just a lil over 200k on it now.

beaten daily for about the last 4 years. runs great! daily driver. just lil issues here and there. nothing major.

take good care of it and it should last damn near forever!
