On the road again! My car was down so I could change out my valve stem seals. I did that then thought it would be a good idea to do the valve springs too. I ordered a set of comp cams BBC inners from Summit Racing and installed them. I also put the Aeromotive AFPR back on. It took me a while to get back into the garage to put it together. Been doing some family fun outings the last few weekends. I finally got it back together and got it started only to find some trouble. The idle was low, stumbling & dying. When I touched the throttle it would hesitate and want to die. I was also getting a CEL of 24 & 34.

I thought it was the AFM, so I borrowed Darrel's and swap mine with it. That didn't fix it. I found that the TPS was out of spec, so I re-adjusted it back to spec. No fix, but I feel much better now that it's in spec again.

I forgot that I took off the stock FPR and went back with the Aeromotive AFPR. I bumped up fuel pressure up and the low/stumbling idle went up and smoothened out. I blipped the throttle a little and hesitation was no longer there. So I'm good for now. Still leaking power steering pump fluid though. I'll get to that later.

Just caught up on the thread.

Darrell, is that piston rings? If so you don't have to take it apart right, just the head and the pan?

Aerojock, is your car burnt orange? If so did it have rats nest in it when you got it? I think i met you three years ago.

Damn Mike long no see on the forum Mr. Big Game Hunter. Lol....i just caught up also. As a update on my hoopty is that it seems to be a bad/improper install of the head gasket. I pulled engine and noticed what looked like an oil leak between the head and block at or between cylinders one and two. Here's a pic after the head was off. See the oil going down the block. It wasn't that much until i loosened the studs.

What looks like oil and coolant under gasket and around the studs.

I believe the deposits on top of the head is from burning oil and coolant. Let me know if I'm wrong plz.

When i was removing head for some reason the studs on the exhaust side by #2-3 cylinder seemed not as tight as the other studs. So I'm thinking the either were not torque properly at the begining or they loosened after a few heat cycles. Well i cleaned everything as best i could and for shizz and grinz i reinstalled the gasket and head. Performed the leak down test and it read only 15-20% loss across all cylinders which the tester says is in the good ti excellent range. So now I'm sure it's operator error and impatience and planning a slower triple check build after the holidays. Im not trying to knock the 7Mhouse at this time but as my inexperience going this far into an engine build but I'm learning fast.

Hey guys what's up? Mike, I got your PM. I was just calling to bug, and see how progress with the is going.
Darell, did you chase/clean your head bolt threads before installing your ARP's? I'm thinking they backed out myself. Hey, how long did it take to yank the engine out this time? Are you getting faster?
I went out for a nice drive this morning around Medina lake & park rd 37. It was a nice drive with twistes toward the end of it. Can't wait until we can all cruise it together.

Cool Nic, and welcome to the San Antonio forums. What year? Any mods? Any pics?

I have a 1991 white package 5spd hardtop here. A few mods here and there, but I think my turbo is going south for the winter. :(
I'm going to pull my wastegate off sometime this week and see if it's operating normally before I dive in to buying a new turbo.

Yes indeed it is.
No need for subliminal messages here. It looks like I'm gonna have to get one anyway. We'll see in the next coming days.
I think because I ran too small of a drain line and oil kept backing up into the turbo. That may explain why my car would smoke a couple of minutes after I start it. That would give the oil time to back up into the drain line, into the turbo, through the seals, and out the exhaust. After the car warms up it would go away, probably because the oil would thin out once hot. I run 10w40. I think this has been going on long enough to ruin my already used unknown condition turbo. That's my theory, and it could be very wrong.

Mike, you gave me a -10AN drain line a while back that I should have used. I just ordered and 7m specific drain flange from Arizona Performance last night so I can use it. It may be too late now, but it's worth a try.

If it turns out to be a bad turbo I'm going to order a 60-1 P-trim CHRA and run with that. That's gonna be my lowest cost option of getting a new turbo.

Mike, when are you gonna get that mid-pipe fabbed up? I think we're more excited to see your car on the road than you are.

Man Frank why did you give that up. Pretty nice looking car that Nick is sportin now.

Does anyone have a spare cylinder head they want to part with? I've been really having issues with head gaskets on my car for awhile now and I'm coming to the conclusion it may be my head. I think after 20yrs of heat cycled has softened it causing my bhg issues. I'm going to take this one and have it tested for hardness but if anyone has one laying around in good condition let me know.
