you may or may not know sw racecars make cages for us.

8pt moly for $399 and 10pt moly for $499

they also make in steel.

8pt $169 and 10pt for $249

i know you are all about japanese parts, just throwing this out there ;)

The only question I have is Autopower or SW? Which is better? SW is more affordable by the looks of it, but anyone have any real experience with either/or?

Aren't the cheaper SW cages ERW steel which is not legal for SCCA, NASA, etc. IIRC, the DOM mild steel is the same price as chromoly, at least the last time I talked to them that's what they said. I think Dr. Jonez has one of these in his car. I remember him saying that it took some work to get everything to fit together right.

But compared to autopower, I would rather go with SW if you have the tools and skills to put it together. Autopower is bolt in, but I'm really not a fan of the way the a-pillar bars come down on the 6-point cages.

heh. the big question is can you weld? do you know someone that welds. the HUGE diff in price is because the SW cages are merely kits- pre-bent tubing that you notch and weld together and weld into the car. the autopower cages are bolt together/bolt in.

no. if you have a cage install NO ONE should be anywhere near it, unless you're going to pad the whole thing.

ive seen hondas parked outside walmart on a friday night(their lil gathering spot). they had and i kid you not, PVC roll cages setup. faux rollcage with then 4 people pilled in with their heads resting against the pipes. i dont know about you but i was seriously impressed with that.:squirt-mo

lol... pvc roll cage. let's not talk about that...

So the SW is complete DIY? I can get someone to weld for me, and my buddy is buying a tubing notcher soon, so I can have it all built for me, but the fact that I can't weld means I'll be paying someone to weld it for me, and that'll mean it's gonna probably cost more than the autopower... boo.

for roll cages does the welder have to have experience in that sort of thing to do it right? a friend of mines dad is really into metal work. he builds tow trailers and stuff like that(and works for Honeywell). ive been considering putting a cage in mine and having that guy weld it for me(free or beer).

im not sure though if he has the type of skill to do it though since it is a life saving device i dont want to risk anything....

90% of what the cage can handle in a crash is how good it was welded. Also, if its chrome molly, don't let any touch it with a mig welder, or with a heavy unexperienced foot on a tig welder.

It really depends on why your putting a roll bar in it. for legality at the drag races, (if running faster than 11.49 1/4 mi. or 7.49 1/8 mi.) a 8pt bar is good up to 135mph.
or if it is just for show.

I have a SW chrome moly, IMO if your putting a cage in as I did, you are better off just having a reputable chassis shop install it from scratch. The SW is NOT a direct fit, almost all of the notches, angles and lengths had to be redone. the shop that did mine did an excellent job and the tig welds were awesome. He bent the door bars around the door panel for more seat room, I wouldn't have done any different way.
Just because someone can weld does not mean they can install a cage properly, if your fast enough and the dragstrip follows the NHRA rules to the tee, the bar/cage must also be "certified" if you don't know the rules on cage specs, don't expect it to pass.

Here are some pic's

hey toyman-

do you happen to have any shots of the rear bars and a direct side shot thru the door?

thanks

also, most bolt in cages are not legal for cars <11.49
but, they are easy to put in, really help stiffen up the chassis and do add some saftey.

i would def go after chromoly. it is more expensive, but better material and a hell of a lot lighter. buddy has a ms roll bar (4pt) and it weighs more than his cm 10pt cage
