Some of you may have seen my post about my project.

I will spare you all the intense 4wd details. It is a big 4runner expedition-style recreational off-road vehicle. With my 7M-GTE from my supra (which I bought just for the engine, trans, TCCS, and seats).

This car had 242,000 miles on it, and ran pretty well. I plan to replace a bumch of seals, and the headgasket. and go with ARP studs. Then max out the stock turbo... like 12PSI or so. WIth pretty much no mods. Just maintinance. Then on the future, a rebuilt bottom end and head (with factory type parts) a better trim CT26, injectors, bigger AFM, and tuned for what gets you guys around 400 at the wheels. (might get me 300 haha... I have like 200lbs of drivetrain rotating mass).

Here is where I started:

Here is after about an hour:
p481209_2.jpg

I have a feeling oil isn't supposed to go down in the spark plug recesses.
p481209_3.jpg

I'm lucky... It came off in one solid piece after this shot.
p481209_4.jpg

Look pretty darn good to me.
p481209_5.jpg

I ran out of time at this point yesterday, so I threw my straight edge on the block and then the cylinder head. I couldn't see light between any surfaces... so they are straight, or close to it. I am going to buy some feeler gauges today, clean both surfaces, and check to see if I need machine work done, then order a HG. I was planning on using a razor-blade gasket scraper with the spray remover as well. Any comments or suggestions? I read in aanother thread that you should block sand after this process (unless you have it machined or use the waffle looking block thing with the media... I forgot the name).

I am reluctant to go with a 3 piece metal (like cometic or HKS) because they require tighter tolerances on flatness for propor sealing. This is only if I don't get machine work done.

I also hybridized the r154 tranny from the supra and the r150 from the 4runner to make a 4wd r154... Here is one pic from that process:

So nobody cares about tearing down a factory turbo motor with almost a quarter million miles and seeing the inside, but when someone buys JDM RAINGUARDS there are like 40 replies. WTF is this place, a community for mercedes owners?

Nice to see someone else do a wheeler. Its a shame they didn't offer trucks/4Runners stock with the 7M. I did my swap over three years ago and love it. I use the w56 tranny though w/a 5M bellhousing. Works well. I'm still running the 4.10 gears on 33's. From the pics it looks like your tires are a bit larger. You guys up north are lucky to get to use your 4WD way more than we do in S. Texas. I live on the beach but rarely need the 4WD. The light truck just floats over the sand. Anywho keep up the good work and keep us posted

My truck is being aimed at multi-purpose with a large emphasis on rock crawling and snow. I have 21" of clearance under the diffs for snow/rocks, and in rocks you need a ton of strength. So I am running mercedes unimog axles (~2 ton duty.. ) with tires from a 5-ton U.S. military truck (no flats possible), and I had to have an R series tranny. My weak links are the driveshafts. Why? because they can be changed with two 14mm wrenches in under 20 minutes. Tranny is a few hours, transfer case is an hour, axle shaft is about 10 hours and an 80 ton press.

I just copied all the good stuff from my build thread on another forum. So some of it my be totally lame for supra owners... who knows.

Pretty nice 4runner for $800, eh? had a 3.0, has a moonroof too. Rear axle is for sale, $150 drum-to-drum, IFS box $125 shipped.

46" Michelin XLs. said to be 99% tread, were really 50% tread : (

All clean, ready for new stuff.

Need to make a custom tranny to get the 7MGTE in place of the 3VZE if you want to have a transfer case behind it.

Here is all the R154 (2wd) internals, with the R150 (4wd) main shaft. Note the labels by the main shafts....

Trannys are actually fun to work on.
p482994_11.jpg

Just need to put in shifters and put the case together.
p482994_12.jpg

yep. 404s. Rebuilds for NATO until they stopped using 404s...
p482994_13.jpg

Thanks Dan and Chris for helping get my 250lb wheel/tire sets onto my 700lb axles.

Why you cannot use an R150 with a supra motor:

short shaft (on floor) is 88 R150F. Long shaft (in tranny) is 89 R154

Nice little write up there. Once the Sup is running I have a new project. I think I'll try to modify a tranny like that. I was originally building a rockcrawling DD myself since I lived in PA when I started this truck but the need is just not there where I live now. Plus I'm always working so I have zero time . Nice work

What company would that be? USA6X6? that Runner looks like it's going to be sick. Can't wait to see some more progress on it.

damn! you should do a full writeup on the r154/r150 hybrid. i'll be putting a 7mgte in my '94 within the next two years! (though i'm only going as large as 33" tires.)

i read over on pirate 4x4 that they're about to cast a mold for the 7M->r150 bellhousing! :)

I am such a thorough cheapskate that I still wouldn't buy it. This tranny was free (since I had both). Custom bellhousings are usually like 200-300.

Cool though. They will sell a ton of those! Its a killer swap (unless you have crappy gearing. the 7m isn't an excellent low end motor).
