check out suprasport.com and their hose techniques kit... it's only $68 and it's all the hoses you need for your supra and they come in a bunch of colors... I just ordered a black set...

got it off, woo.

anyhow, here's what i did after that.

First I found a purple feather stuck to my radiator after taking it out.

I took the fan off too.

A half hour later I had the cam gears and the cover off. I coud easily see where the oil leak was coming from. Also, the original timing belt looks pretty new and in very very good condition. There is also no oil leak coming from the crank. WTF the dealer was gonna charge me for shit I didn't need.

I got the cam seals out carefully.

Exhaust cam seal turns to stone after 15 years (mine could actually be rotated in place because it had shrunk so much!). Be sure to replace the CPS o-ring while your in this deep. It will have turned to stone as well... and water bypass hoses #5 and #6.

Can anyone point me twoards everything I need to start a rebuild? I've seen lots of guides about rebuilds and such, but most of them are like, "take engine out, take this off, clean this, replace this, put engine back in".

Are there any guides out there that include everything noobish such as engine stands, how to store parts, lists of every part you need for a performance rebuild, and such like that?

I've never seen a cam still in a engine with rust on the lobes, I'd pull it and get everything gone through by a good shop.

Just out or curiosity anyone know if you would be able to effectively polish that in car or would they for sure need to be pro ground and polished?

As much as I don't want to, I'm going to put the new cam seals on, clean up the engine compartment, put the new valve cover gaskets on, and get all the new hoses. Oh and the new PCV pipe too.

I don't have the time and the funds to do a rebuild until I'm out of college in a couple years.

Plus, I dont think that's rust. Just looks like coked oil. That's what my old engine looked like and all it really needs is some brake cleaner and a rag.

Demianu, Good job mah boy. I like how you're diving into this project head-first. The only advice I can give you has already been said, but I'll say it again; Replace ALL rubber hoses. At this point, they're all junk. Replace them now while you can and save a lot of time later and also aggravation.
Also, follow Malloynx's link to GoodYear's site and buy all the hoses you can find. Buy the rest at Toyota and you should be all set!

Sorry for not updating in a while, I had to pause my repair work and focus on college for a little bit.

I'll post more in a couple weeks, when I'm back at home.

Update:

I can't get the damn cam seals in! Is there some sort of trick to this, do I need some special tool to push them in?

Make sure that the cam-gears are off ;-)

I took the seals to Home Depot with me and matched up a piece of PVC. Then I closed off one end of a short piece of PVC and used it to tap the seals in. You can loosen the cap that goes over them, but I wouldn't loosen it much, unless you follow the right steps for removing/installing the cam.

Make sure you put some sealant back where the caps meet the head...

Good luck!

Hey hey, it's finally time for an update! I'm home from college finally. I would like to say that I will be doing a lot to my car the whole summer, but I joined the navy and leave June 26th:aigo:.

The valve covers are back on with new gaskets.

There are a total of 5 hoses that I need to replace. I'm bringing all of them to toyota tommorrow and I hope I can get them all by this weekend.

I had to remove the alternator to get to the other side of one of the hoses:icon_mad:

The cam seals from carquest just don't want to go in. I screwed up one of them simply trying to push it in with my hands. When I go to toyota tommorrow I'm going to buy 2 new ones and trash the carquest ones.

After I get the seals in and the new hoses on the car should be up and running without flaw..... **knock on wood**.

Future plans once it's running and I'm in the navy:

~I'm keeping the car, don't get any thoughts unless the numbers are high :biglaugh:

~After the navy I plan on restoring the supra (full paint job inside and out, chipped/cracked/rusted/broken parts replaced, stuff like that). I'm not sure what I should do with the engine... either build it up and rebuild it or drop a 1jz in there...

I've still got a few weeks before I leave for the navy so I'll be around here more often until then. Oh and one more thing, what's this sealant that I should use with the cam seals?

Wow, talk about old thread revival!

don't use any sealant on the cam seals! You could just take off the two front cam caps, place the seal where it goes, and then replace the cam caps... that's what i did, and it made it a whole lot easier... be sure to torque EVERYTHING to spec!!

Afternoon all... Today is a day of Success!

I went to toyota, they had both cam seals. We had trouble finding out which hoses to order but I was able to order the oil hose that connects to the valve cover. The other 4 hoses I'm going to get some where else since they're all hoses I can cut myself.

The cam seals from toyota are way better than the carquest ones. I had no problem getting the seals in.

The oil hose I was talking about should be at the toyota parts place by 2:30 today. I'll put that on and basically be done!

What I did today:
~Put cam seals in
~Put cams and belt back on
~Put spark plug wire assembly back on
~Put throttle cables back on

What I have left to do:
~Put that oil hose back on
~Put alternator back on
~Put radiator and fan back on
~Put 3000 pipe and blow-off valve back on with a new hose I will get
~Put PCV pipe back on when I get the other hoses (or is it called PVC? I can't remember)
~Put new oil in
~Put new coolant in
~Connect battery
~Start car

I probably missed something on my "to do" list, but I'll find out because I have all my parts laid out in order and very organized.
