Things I needed to replace at the start of this process: Valve Cover Gaskets, Cam Seals, Crank Seal, Timing Belt.

I've never done complicated work like this, only simple tune up things. Any help along the way will be much appreciated.

Here's my parts, and the engine before

Step 1: Getting to the valve cover gaskets.
First problem, bad hoses. These 19 year old hoses would crack like desert mud.

What's up with this bar? Looks like I need to replace this.

Some weird wire I found that wasn't connected to anything.

Some weird hose I found that was plugged.

Some weird oily gunk on these air hole thingies, lol.

So far, I have to replace 4 hoses with clamps and that bar. Part numbers/names someone?

First valve cover off, hooray
sm_photo_missing.jpg

The second one was a bitch to get off because of that oil return hose...which was cracked/cracking too.

I need to remove the alternator to get the rest of the cracked hose off, and a new one on :( (and no i'm not talking about that hose sticking up)

What the heck is this crap? It's like oil that solidized, or some sort of plastic cover that is all cracked up.

So... everything is off and I can now replace the valve cover gaskets. I'm not going to assemble yet until I clean up the valve cover area, order all those stupid hoses that got messed up, and find out what that crap is on my engine.

www.cygnusx1.net the supras link and then into the parts catalog, it takes some searching in there

some of the hoses you're looking for the toyota part numbers are:
12262
12263
12264
17347
17348
i'm not for sure which ones those are but i know they will atleast be some of the ones you need since i just went through the same thing, and replaced the whole wiring harness...

hope this helps

I come from a land down under
Wire: Confirm it's a coil pack ground put a new terminal on it and reconnect it.

Hose: I'd replace every hose in the car as they all look trashed, it's up to you if you reconnect the TB heating but under certain circumstances turbo cars can freeze up the TB.

I suspect it was done on ours to help out with emmisions so shouldn't hurt to leave unconnected (At least tidy it up).

That is the Postive Crankcase Ventilation, And if you are not going to have much blowby then you could put filter things on but i wouldnt recommend it. Maybe someone else will have a proven method, seeing yours is pretty f'ed up.

I think I know what all that dark chipped stuff is on top of my No. 3 cylinder cover... paint. I saw some pictures of clean stock engines and their No. 3 cylinder covers are the color of the chip like things on mine, so the paint must have simply chipped off.

Should i look to buy a new one or just clean off the one i have?

Redacted per Title 18 USC Section 798
That motor is a mess. It's needs to be looked over closely if you want it to be reliable. Why all the corrosion?

The wire is as IJ says: coil pack ground. The plugged hose looks to be the coolant pipe on the right side below the exhaust manifold. It's supposed to be capped off but not that way. Do as he suggests and replace every hose on the thing, including all the vacuum lines. Check that stock CBV to see if it's shot, most are. Also get some 6 X 30 hex head bolts and external locks for the valve covers and don't over torque them.

What's that on the heater hose? Looks like a back flush kit...
