:: facepalm :: wikipedia is NOT a good way to back up your argument.

and as poodles says, it's not backpressure, its exhaust flow. when people say something increases backpressure, what it ACTUALLY means is a restriction in flow.

if you still don't believe me, go take a mechanical engineering course.

"backpressure" is to fluid dynamics as "centrifical/centrifugal force" is to physics.

KISS, and wiki does a good job of that.

So if it actually means PRESSURE, than call it what you will.

So if the pressure after the turbo is X with the WG closed, then when the WG opens and introduces more exhaust gasses into the system the pressure will rise, period.(Or BP as most peope know it as) But like IJ said, with a good free fowing exhaust you won`t notice much.

It makes a difference with fluid dynamics.
Similar to what Seth was mentioning.

You have dynamic velocities occurring within the exhaust as well as thermal dynamics. Keeping these dynamics separate is the only sure way to know you're avoiding any minimal restrictions/turbulence.

I feel it's pretty obnoxious having my WG vented to atmosphere, however my car is a purpose built car.

Do some more research, and determine what it is exactly you want to achieve.

WG is only opening when it trying to limit flow through the turbine, as such I don't see it being an issue at all as long as it's not spiking.

WG is LIMITING power, not adding....

I am suprized that this isn't obvious to more people..........

If the exhaust is restrictive and you vent a big WG to atmosphere it can actually allow the engine to make more power ;)

I'm loving my open wastegate dump. :D
But yeah, if you prefer to re route it to the dp, it's best to have the outlet merge with the exhaust flow instead of intersect. I've had re routed dump in my old seven M setup. You'd hear the exhaust note more under boost. With the open dump (2j setup), the exhaust note kinda disappears when the wastegate is open :D

fixed a bit ;)

My 2 cents. I have an open wastegate at present. I have not yet been hassled by the police and want to keep it that way. When I really get on the boost hard, it is VERY loud and it does stink. Sounds like this are cop magnets.
I took Rob, 92nsx for a short romp on the edge of a small town tonight. Just ran her through the gears all the way to redline in 4th. Really fast and really loud. I am calling tomorrow to have her plumed into my Greddy exhaust. This way at least I won't be advertising I just spanked another GT Mustang to the cops.
Haven't some of you been at minimum been talked to by the men in blue regarding your open wastegate??

Haha I would just say what are you talking about, listen to the car as it idles. It is not loud at all, must be a mistake!! What is he/she going to do, make you make a pull to see if your wastegate is that loud? lmao

funny thing saturday night i was coming back from a wedding and a corvette with a old man driving pulled next to me at a light and revved the engine....so as the light turned green i pulled off normally and then he stomps the gas and so do i ....this was just a first gear pull and under a tunnel...lol..... so little did i know there was a cop behind me.....when i saw him i turned pale. The officer got next to me at the light and complimented me on my car and asked me what i had done and why my motor was screaming under the tunnel...lol.... i got lucky not like i went past the speed limit but i could have gotten a ticket or 2....
-so manny its really what you want out of it if you dont mind the noise go for it

All of the cars with wastegate dumps I've setup have not had a problem with exhaust gases getting in to the cabin. Make sure to run a tube off the wastegate to direct the exhaust down/under the car.

That said I'm still a fan of recirculation. You could make a convertible setup where you could change out a dump pipe for one that connects to a flange on the side of the exhaust.

Yes, it is VERY LOUD and VERY FAST. It is way to loud to enjoy the sound and power of the 2jz once the WG opens. No wonder it was so fricking loud on the dyno. I thought it was due to the room the dyno was in and the sound was echoing / bounching around off the walls. Im waiting in line for another ride once the WG is recirculated ;)

One of the cars I mentioned (MK4 TT) had a SP turbo kit that included the same HKS GT 60mm gate you and I both have. SP included a dump tube that just cleared the bottom of the subframe. We never had any exhaust smell in the cabin that could be attributed to the dump. Sounded good but 2JZ-GTE's tend to produce a better sound than 7M's. Another MK4 TT we used a Tial and made a similar dump tube - same qualities. Keep in mind the wastegate is only open when boosting above what the wg spring is set to, usually occuring at a high enough vehicle speed to clear exhaust fumes as long as the dump tube terminates near the bottom of the car.
