well aside from the obvious, could it be due to your driving and shifting styles? I've driven the w58 tranny for many years and just starting to drive the 154 since the swap and if you pound on it, it would not shift smoothly. Unlike the w58 you can drive it hard and still shift nicely. My point is with the way the 154 is constructed with all these heavy duty parts, shouldn't it withstand the abuse and provide smooth shifting regardless of how you drive it.

why is that? why does the w58 shifts nicer and the r154 does not? just want to know for my better understanding.

It's like the stock clutch vs. a 6 puck. While the stock is easy to modulate and drive, the 6 puck will take whatever you throw at it. Difficulty to use is just a byproduct of its strength.

its the thrust washer amongst the 100's of thousands of miles put on them!

lol 1000's of miles i had a W58 with over 150,000k miles on it and a lighlty used jdm supra R154 with less then 30,000 miles W58 will shift like butter until it granades, R154 shifts like crap dont matter how you treat it or what the millage is.

I think the W58 is more precision designed and shifts well based on teeth size finer gears better tolerences.

R154 just feels more like they threw heavy duty steel gears with larger teeth and less precision there is a lot of play in it.

as its been said and proven the w58 is more of a sports transmission the R154 is a heavy duty transmission hence the notchy shifting. It's not as bad as most would think ;)

Wonders if the Solstice R154 thrust washers hold up better then the supra's hmmmmm....

If you look at the schematics of the transmission, you can see that it's very similar on the inside, but they use different conical designed syncros. I assume that it's better, cause one, it's the year 2006-2007, why would they not make the R154 transmission better when it has some flaws and it's old tech, two, it looks like a better design to keep the syncros from sheering apart under high shock load, and three, the Solstice transmission has been proven time and again that it holds 400+ hp/tq. and more.

I havent seen anything about the solstice transmission thats why I was wondering about it. I have heard it bolts up to the 7m but I havent seen it proven to hold 400+hp/tq on the 7m. Don't be mistaken I'm not at all saying that your statement is false but I have yet to see it. Have any links I'd be interested on reading up on it myself!
Also I would be interested to see if the thrust washer in that r154 could be used in the 7m r154 since its better...

man, i've been dreading the switch to the r154. i've got one sitting in my garage in really nice condition, but i think i'll wait until i grenade my w58 until i put it in. (unless the 7m swap into my truck calls for the clutch/flywheel that's currently in my car earlier than i expect;))

i <3 my w58 and it's silky smooth shifts.
