Trans, clutch, flywheel, 5-speed peddles, Clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder, SS lines, and lots of extra time. Someone else add what I'm missing; it's too late and I can't recall.

Why would you swap trannies?

Do you know what the R154 has that the w58 does not?

Do you plan on having more than ~350 hp?

Do you realize the w58 is a much more comfortable and smooth shifting transmission and that many people that have used both would much prefer a w58 for lower power (<350) applications?

**Edit, i just read your last post. Keep the w58 until you reach it's limits. Maybe IJ will chime in here to further persuade you...

Why waste money to add weight, clunkyness, and notchiness to your Supra? <<Spoken from a guy with both trannies in cars less than 100 feet away from him. ;)

you don't need the stainless steel hard clutch lines as driftmotion sells a single braided stainless clutch hose just for the r-154 swap...you will need the r-154 driveshaft (or just the front section as the rear is the same)....you will also need a turbo speedo cable if I'm not mistaken....you may need a transmission mount if the auto is different.

Holy crap. :dunce: I thought you were going from w58 to r154. I forget that auto trannies exist in Supras. :D

I'd still say try for a w58 instead of the r154.

Dont forget flywheel, clutch, slave, master cylinders, clutch hardlines, clutch pedal assembly, doesn't the ecu need to be swapped? if so, you'll need a neutral start switch, i believe... etc

ECU doesn't need to be swapped. Maybe your R154 sucks, mine shifts just fine? :dunno:

Try Redline MT90, or a transmission without half a gear broken and floating around in there, they really aren't bad at all.

It shifts and functions perfectly fine. If I didn't have the w58 to compare it to side by side, I might not think anything of the difference. The w58 feels like a car, the r154 feels more like a small truck tranny.

Besides, aren't w58's much cheaper to buy than an r-154?

I'm not trying to be a dick, but I really think you should try another R154. Mine feels like butter, other than reverse it's smooth as silk. My Supra is the easiest shifting car of any I've driven (several Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds, trucks, a Civic, a CRX, my Celica, etc). Maybe you need to replace your bushing? I've read that your turbo car was quite old and dilapidated, that might be just the trick you need. I've never driven a car with a W58 but it can't possibly be too much better than my R154 is, or I wouldn't even know I was shifting!

Yes, W58s are a good bit cheaper, but I'd rather pay the extra now then end up paying an extra $200 on top at the end because I blew up the W58...

Drive a well cared for w58. ;) The r-154 isn't horrible, plus my w58 got a full rebuild last year, so that may also be exaggerating my evaluation. I'd like to hear what IJ has to say though.

I dont know you guys i had the w58 when i had my na motor and i swapped in the r154 just cuz it was already bolted up to the turbo motor i put in and both of the transmissions feel pretty much the same. They're both pretty stupid to put into reverse... still havent really figured that one out yet and i ran mt-90 in both and they shift pretty smooth. ill shorten this up.. driving the manual whatever it may be will be more fun than the auto.:icon_bigg

Put the transmission into 4th gear, then put it into reverse. You shouldnt get any grind and it should be a hell of alot easier. Works for me anyways :icon_bigg

yeah I do that too sometimes. Helps a lot. It sucks when i can't even cram it in reverse... I kinda dread the day i'll have to back up really quick and I won't be able to get it in gear....:aigo: haha.

too bad we don't have synchronized reverse... that would be nice.:icon_razz

Does the r154 have a shorter throw or shorter length shifter? if any car shifter feels like a truck, it's mine. it's smooth, but it sure moves around a lot.

Probably needs the bushings changed, Billy M was selling a "kit", I got one but haven't install it yet.

easy to grind the fucker..

even the manual says to put it in neutral and release the clutch pedal if it doesn't want to go into reverse...

I do that sometimes and I hear a clunk, and it'll shift fine..

Yeah i usually put it in first and then tried reverse. It works sometimes. LOL last night i went driving around with some friends and as I went to park and put it in reverse it started grinding into reverse and i was like NO NO NO!!!! so i put it in 1st then 3rd and reverse and it still kinda grinded so i just kind of put it in as i felt the gears mesh up :( ... but the shifters off of the w58 and r154 are the same i noticed that as i swapped out the trannys. Thanks for the advice on the 4th gear and the neutral stuff ill have to try it.

Going to another gear before reverse is a waste.

To avoid a clunk or grinding do this:

-Press clutch pedal in
-Wait ten seconds
-Put in reverse

If it doesn't go in, put it back in neutral, let the clutch out, then try the steps over.

Your welcome. It always works for me. I did it with both my w58 and r154's I had.

And I have to argue it isnt a waste. Its supposed to stop movement in the transmission.. And reverse not having a syncro, movement is bad obviously causing the grinding.

I'd also have to dissagree, it works. I'll try reverse, no-go. shift to 4th, back into reverse, slips in gear. :)

I dont like letting the clutch out because it takes longer to wait for it to slow down and not slam when the reverse gear meshes. I hate that feeling.

OH and moving the car works too, if you're on an incline and can safely let the car move a tiny bit, hold pressure on the shifter toward reverse, and let the car move. The car will help line-up the reverse gears and it will go in gear. Might make a little noise if you aren't gentle, but it works.
