alright my r154 when sitting in neutral with the car on makes this weird noise. its not the throw out bearing and goes away when the clutch is in because the tranny isnt spinning. i cant really describe the noise its sort of like wooga-wooga-wooga-wooga but non stop and its pretty loud. the transmission shifts fine though and no problems with that just the damn noise. from what i have concluded it is the input shaft bearing. i am not sure though, the engine and tranny are out of the car but i have yet to tear it down. i do not want to screw anything up as i am not familiar with car trannys. i can tear the engine down in my sleep but ive never done a tranny. only dirt bike 6 speed trannys. but my real question is would i need a press or any special tool to replace the input shaft bearing? i dont really want to buy a full rebuild kit because of costs but would the syncros be in need of replace if it shifts fine? it has 180k miles on it but who knows if it is the origional tranny. please let me know. thanks

to answer your question you can use a bearing puller to get it off but you have to use a press to get it on. any shop should do it for free or dam near it. but the thing is it can be something else. when in neutral every thing is spinning but the hubs on the op shaft. sooooooo that means there are a gang load of bearing that it could be. each gear has a caged needle roller bearing in it. so what might happen is you split the case only to find that the input shaft bearing is fine. then what.........

you have to tear it down. and inspect every little thing until you find your problem. not that easy if its your first time.

then whats worse the noise might not even be your tranny. lol.

you best bet would have been to take a vid of the noise so some trained ears could hear it.

I don't mind tearing the tranny apart to find the problem I'm just hoping it us only one thing. As for a video, my engine took a shit on me so it's all out of the car right now. That's why I'd like to fix the problems now instead of later. Also, could anything besides the bearings be shot? Would I be able to visibly tell if the bearing is shot and by feeling it? Thanks

yeah it could be something else. wooga wooga doesn't really tell much as to whats wrong.

to inspect a bearing you see how smooth it spins, if the inner and outer race are loose or can "wiggle", damaged cage, discoloration on the needle roller ones, or if like mine it will be plain FUCKED UP and you won't be able to miss it lol, ect....

if you want to learn you gotta start somewhere. just be very careful and take pics because everything has to go together perfect. but when it does everything fits like a glove.

I guess I'll get started on it. Do syncros usually need replacing? It shifts fine but I dont want to do anything again. And does the rebuild kit from drift motion include everything bearing related to do a rebuild?

Well I tore it apart although I didn't get very far due to not owning a single torx whrench. But I got it apart and the input shaft bearing had some play as well as the reverse idler shaft bearing. I'll have to finish tearing it down later tomorrow. Maybe I'll post some picks

You should definately do so. I've been wondering how gnarly the inside of the transmission is, I think pictures would help some (me) more than tearing into it blindly. If it were me, I would be hearing a gypsy speaking into a crystal ball and tell me I would be speaking profanities the whole time.

the reverse idler shaft has no bearing. what most likely causing the play is the bearing retainer on the intermediate plate that holds that shaft in place and should hold it in there tight. but that shit gets old, loose, and weak. make sure you get the mc retainer. that is something you don't want to leave out.

Well I font know if that is what the bearing I called but the one on the end of the shaft the reverse gear sits on. It is right below the input shaft bearing and both of those are a little loose up and down. I am not sure how the input shaft disconnects from the other shfts yet as I have not had much time to work.
