do you guys that have arp studs have to take the big vaccum bolt on the back of the head out to get the head off? Does anybody happen to know what size it is? man it really sucks you have to lift the head up so high with studs.

Its a water line, not vacuum. Its fairly large, bigger than 24mm I believe, sorry but I cant remember off the top of my head the what it is.
i hope you have the studs with the hex heads in them, cause youre gonna have a tough time getting the head out of there without removing the head studs.
I just went out and checked for ya. It's a 1 1/4 inch socket, friggin huge. Weights about 1-2 pounds, but fits super well over the rear union bolt as it's called.

thanks man. i just got home from work with my calipers to measure it but i guess i dont have too. as fars as the hex head, no, i had to grind a small amount off my fire wall lip. but it looks fine cant even hardly tell its there and it makes it alot easier. but its still a bitch.
man i cant seem to get that damn union bolt loose for nothing. i got my hg. i hate it when one thing keeps you from accomplishing something.
Are you using a breaker bar? I did, the extra torquing power you get from a longer bar really helps with this situation.

a breaker bar wont clear the fire wall (iam using a deepwell socket i dont think a normal will clear the neck) unless you know something i dont. i am trying to use a chain wrench around the socket, but it keeps slipping.
I'm terribly sorry, I thought you had the head off the block already. I assume you are changing the hg right? Since you said you got the hg in. I would reccomend doing this union removal with the head out of the engine bay, it'll be about a billion times easier.

Be careful they're really easy to shear off as the fitting has holes drilled at right angles in it to allow coolant flow.
If you unbolt the tranny mount you can jack up the trans enough to tilt the motor enough so the head will clear the firewall.

Normal depth socket will work. Mine does, anyhow.

ya thats the thing i cant get the head off with that bolt on there. i have the arp studs as stated early in post.
Been installed upside down or a really old set?

The motor will pivot on the front mounts and hopefully give you enough room to slide the head up over the studs.

i dont hardly think we installed them upside down but who knows. i am gonna go with there older. thanks for the suggestion IJ but i dont understand how that will lower the block for it to clear, iam not quesioning you, i just dont understand.
It doesn't "lower" the block it raises and tilts it forward.
