The thing I hate most about all the next gen consoles is the lack of manual loading ability (like ps1, ps2 slim). Most of the broken consoles I have seen, that aren't RROD or disk read errors, have broken disk tray motors.
I have xbox360 and wii. I have been waiting for a ps3 price drop, but if they make a slim with a open top setup Ill get that.
After having worked in the gaming industry for many years I can tell you the chances of you ever seeing another system with a flip open top manual loading system is pretty much slim to absolutely none.
The problem, especially with open top designs has been proven that they do not last nearly as long for the general consumer in the average environment. The design is subject to more often then not being left open by younger gamers and broken off or collecting dirt/food/pets/whatever. I expect to see more and more designs like the Nintendo Wii, a front load, no tray variation that allows the unit to do the loading without the dangers of being left open and without the bigger problems of being closed roughly or breaking due to impacts. But top loading designs are pretty much for sure a thing of the past for gaming systems.
The cost of production is lower, however the cost of frequency for repair was in fact greater. Also the consumer viewed any breakage as a design and therefor manufacturors issue and not as a fault of there own for being clumsy for example.
Sony in particular saw an enormous amount of latching issues and this caused huge amount of disc mounting problems due to worn latches etc.
There ya go, FYI, if anyone cares.
