Progressive Power Steering, VAS

On the back of the power steering pump there is what seems to be a VAS, is this switch to progress the pump as rpm rise? If it is removed will this leave you with non proggressive steering? or will it be sloppy steering?




this is the back of the pump. the hoel with the plug in it is where the switch was.

What that does (it's a hydraulic activated valve) is increase engine idle speed when the car is turned hard at low speed. It prevents an engine stall from the load put on the engine from the P/S pump by opening an air path from the accordion hose to the intake manifold. It has nothing to do with progressive power steering.

its annoying at worst to park sometimes. You can feel the load but a quick blip of the throttle takes care of it.

I would put mine back on (previous owner removed it) if i had a port pre turbo to hook it too.

Yes it is.

So if the steering is really tight at low or no speed, and you do have the valve in place, its likely that this valve is bad and needs to be replaced. Correct?

No, it doesn't affect steering feel at all. It idles the engine up when you turn sharp to prevent stalling due to the engine being loaded most likely at low speed by the PS pump.

damn, any ideas on what would affect the tight steering feel at low speed or idle?

Mine does it too, and I have a new rack with under 20K miles. It's just how the cars without PPS were valved. Made for high speed, not low.
