So my project is an 87 Supra sport edition. As far as I know, the n/a supras that were sport edition came with PPS. also I plan to swap a 1jzgte in this body (the 87). I want to run without P/S and A/C

from searching I found out "the pre89 power steering racks have a power steering damper that looks like a shock absorber (it IS actually) and IIRC it's mounted to the front of the rack."

Here's my questions.

Can I just fill the rack with fluid, and cap it off? If so where do I fill and cap it off? Will it damage the rack because factory is had the damper and PPS?

Also

What belt will I use if I dont want a/c or p/s in the 1jz? I know what belt to use if I just don't want a/c, or just p/s, but what if I don't want either of them?

Thanks!

no, you cannot fill the rack and cap it, you would have to install a bypass between the high and low pressure lines on the rack, or else the fluid will be working against you as you turn the wheel.

and to continue on adam's post

3200+ lbs of car vs 200 lbs of human with the torque arm advantage on the cars side = a the human losing the physics battle.

You need either mechanical advantage by gear reduction or hydraulic assist.

Actually the car weighs 4,600lbs. which isn't better thats for sure.

I ask because i have no idea on power steering lines and how to make them work with the 1jz.

I'll search thanks guys!

I come from a land down under
Custom lines from a hydraulic shop would be one way but I'm sure some of the guys that have swapped Jz's in have a solution.

4600 is the weight with people included ;)
(Mine weighs 4020 wet and has to one of the fattest I know of)

My 87 n/a(sport as well) weighs exactly 3400 lbs. Weighed it on a CAT scale.

I think the pps only comes on the 89+ models(I don't have it).

With PPS

WIthout PPS

The PPS has the electronic control valve, while the non-PPS doesn't.

So if it's not PPS can I do anything to go without P/S?

It doesn't feel very hard to turn the wheel, and my 89 doesnt have p/s.

Here's a pic and you might be able to tell if its pps or not.

Thanks and sorry for the POS camera quality.

leave the power steering on. i just put mine back on after not having it for a year? maybe less... and i'll never put myself thru that again.

even though its on the lighter side, 86.5 sport model, with a bunch of crap gone and e-fans... i could turn the wheel pretty easy without p/s. but with p/s, good god its so easy! but i lost most of my 'road feel' that i had.

if you want to elimiinate the pump, get a spare fitting that goes onto the rack, and then run a feed line to the rack via the overflow, and then just cap the big nipple/old feed for the pump, i had it that way and had no problems. just need space for the fluid to go when you go from full lock to the middle.
