using stock components treated correctly will make a reliable engine. even the oem pistons are worth what 450hp? maybe more for some.
tuning is everything in reliablility and how close to the edge you want to take it for that last 15hp or so.
destressing the rods and then shot peened will make our good rods even better. easy to do and cheap. these rods should handle 500hp as seen by many.
the first pic is where i destressed the rods with a stone and then smoothed them with a flap wheel. smooth and shiny.
the next pic is what they look like after shot peening. a little duller but stronger. i would not see why to shot peen with out destressing first. fractures occur most easly at a corner or edge. when the stresses hit a sharp corner it can break there. If i am correct stress travels along the outer edge of metal and having a smooth finish helps. the shot peening will compress the outer edge of the rod and make it capable to handle more forces.
i may be off target but i think that is what is going on.
