Well heres the deal.

Do you think its needed in the import/drifting/drag world to start caging race cars?

Yes no maybe so?

Im giving this some serious thought. The cars would have to be completely stripped when arriving at the shop, but the cages would be top notch.

Any input?

I am sure there is a market for it.. I dont think having a caged car is a great thing on the street. Ive been in plenty of them. Being 6'8" tall i hit my head on the cage quite a bit.

Just my 2 psi (LOL)

I don't think the market will be big for an MA70 or JZA70. I haven't seen the spec from NHRA, it changed recently, or so I was told. It used to be 11.99 and faster. How many MA70's do it? Not many. Those that do, already have a cage.

I am not saying don't think about it, but think about capital you will invest, for something I don't think will ever take off.

I don't know if you planned on mass production or not. That is what I was getting at.

If you didnt live so damn far away, I'd have you build mine... But yeah, when you get high pwr and start doing serious track time, a cage is a must...

11.49 requires a cage
That's for IHRA tracks and it's actually a roll bar requirement. A full cage isn't needed until 9.99 or faster (or a set MPH). NHRA tracks require a roll bar at 11.99 or faster and a full cage at 9.99 or faster.

The actual enforcement of the rules will vary from track to track. I actually didn't get yelled at for not wearing a helmet until I was in the low 12s in my Talon (13.99 or faster should require a helmet).

I would definately be interested if you made the blueprint for a weld in roll bar (angles, lengths... basic prices/materials used and so on)

that way I could buy the plans from you and have it made locally a lot easier... and not have to take my car half way across the US

Does that sound feasable? Im going to need at lease a roll bar soon

^ No not really. 90% of the cage construction is how well its welded together. I give you blueprints and "Joe" welds it together with a stick welder isn't going to hack it.

Take the car, strip it, and trailer it up here.

Leave said trailer and truck here. Fly home.

Give me about 3 weeks, and then come pick it up via flying.

if you need someone to test fit, guinea pig, etc i know someone that would like to have a 6-8pt cm cage that lives pretty close to you ;)

over the past 7yrs ive learned a few things. one of them is people may be interested all day long but in the end it comes down to "so, how much?".

good luck w/ the project and anything i can do to help let me know.

p.s. and before any asks- no people cant still ride in the back. altho thats a hard task even w/o a cage.

:( oh well.

I have a local guy that is willing to make one, I just wanted to make it easier for him to do.

But I still think you should do them... I love seeing cars with cages cause then you know they are serious... kinda like seeing a guy riding a bike that is actually wearing gear and not just boxers with his overweight gf riding on the back

Most Supras actually run into the 135mph cage requirement before they hit 9.99.. So to clarify, a full cage is required for cars going 9.99 et or 135mph trap. And a 5pt bar is required for cars going 11.49 and under, anything over 11.50 and you dont need anything but a helmet.

I say go for it, start making cages... just make sure you buddy up to an NHRA inspector so you have a quick method of getting cages you make certified. Customers who contract out cages like to get them ready to rock.
