Well my buddy Kris ( mk3_300 ) finally got his greddy/trust manifold today! Its used but in GREAT condition! The guy that had it had a T78 turbo thus welding the extra plate for strenght!

The similarities are VERY CONSISTANT aside from different sized wastegate holes...Trust/Greddy being 46mm and mine ( the SSauto) being 40mm....being the reason for my WG flange being rectangluar in shape and his being a perfect square!

SSAUTOCHROME ( or whoever makes them for every company that sells them) made them SO PRECISELY close to the original its crazy! Kris and I were prepaired for some major differences...but we were stunned when we broke out the micrometer! Even the cuts/welds/bends are all in the SAME POSITION!!!! I mean, this is almost a CARBON COPY ( no pun intended)!

Also, the welds are nearly identicle. The pics really cant show you how great BOTH companies welds are! Of course my ebay one is robotically TIG welded and his are hand TIG welded....

The runners are identicle in shape...though the collector on the Greddy/Trust manifold is TALLER than my ebay one, but the length that the wastegate dump tubes from #3 and #4 tubes flow still sit at the SAME EXACT LEVEL...so the wastegates will be positioned the same depth in the engine bay!

The ebay manifolds flange that meets the head is THICKER than that of the Greddy/Trust though! And the Greddy/Trust manifold is HEAVIER just by about 1/2 a lb......not much, though the difference in the amount of 321ss vs. 304ss may be the cause.

All in all me and kris are VERY impressed with the quality of the ebay manifold! For $200 you cannot beat the work and the FLOW. Either way its better than spending $1400+ on the Greddy/Trust.....He got his for a BARGAIN:naughty:

And its better than stock!

On with the pics:

PS: And i cannot forget to tell I am running a hybrid T3/T4 60 trim Turbonetics BB turbo.....with an XS power T3 to T4 adapter flange! Its beautiful and great fitment!
And yes it clears the hood with inches to spare! We already fitted it once...we will take pics of the WHOLE set up on kris's old motor on the stand next week ( his next days off)!!!

Pardon the dirty turbo...its going to be polished and coated :)

About the only glaring difference is the #2 runner is routed a little better, having said that I'm very happy with my SS header.

I forgot you have on! Is that the one you are using that you coated?

That coating I bought is spray on. My buddy that owns an Airbrush shop will do that for me.....I need to get the manifold sandblasted with 120grit sand and then spray on a thin coat as for say the directions!

I am coating the hot side of the turbo, as well as the down pipe.

PS: did you see how pretty my fingernails are!!!!!!

John: Thermal coating out of can won't last.

Its got to be professionally baked on.

Great post though. Cheers!

Its not just any coating Jon its Techline coating Black Satin.
http://www.techlinecoatings.com/Exhaust.htm

PHP:
Black Satin™ is the most advanced exhaust system coating available

Withstands 2000f temperatures

Easy to apply ceramic reinforced coating designed for high temperature applications

Reduces underhood temperatures, reduces exhaust manifold surface temperatures

Improve exhaust gas velocity, increase H.P.

Air drying, requires no baking, cures on car with exhaust heat.

The instructions say it can DRY by air...but it CURES under heat like in an oven which I will bake mine in at 450 for 1 hour as the directions say. I am getting the mani sand blasted as well to prep for the stuff....Its going to be proffesionally sprayed!

Jon: I know with the piston coatings you have to use a special blasting media not just normal sand or glass beads but I'm not sure for the ceramic coatings.

Do the instructions recommend anything in particular?

Any reason you didn't use the Turbo specific one?

CAN I USE GLASS BEAD TO CLEAN MY PARTS?
No: only use fine sand or fine aluminum oxide. Glass bead is round and while it is a good cleaner it closes the pores of the metal. Use fine sand/aluminum oxide which etches the metal and cleans/opens the pores allowing the coatings to bond into the metal

Yes they do!

NO CERMAIC beads...just straight SAND. 120 grit....though the company I bought it from said anything from 85-120 will work..it just varies on the density of the metal you are working with...so aluminum or magnesium ( soft metals) you need to use 85(+ some)...but on hard metal alloys like 304/321SS you need to use upwards of 120 grit!

Looking good Jon!
Those who are using a T3 hot side should get the SSautochrome header over any other, but those running a straight T4 will benefit from the taller collecter on the trust unit. Just try putting a T67 on an ebay header, you'll have to clock the compressor housing pointing directly at the valve covers for it to clear the #2 runner. That's also why the greddy #2 runner is tucked so far in to the rest of the runners. I can't find the picture depicting this, but it's true. You have to run a spacer, or an adapter to fit a good sized t4 on the ebay mani.
Thanks for the informative thread Jon!
Look what I found. ;)

There is a coater in Orlando that can do it cheaper than what he quoted me. Does he owe you a downpipe? Don't tell me I am going to have a hard time getting this stuff :(

Yeah, he seems like a really nice guy on the phone and very knowledgeable. He has a 99% rating with eBay so I feel confident. I also did the purchase through eBay so there is a record of the transaction. I am actually thinking about flying down to PR to check their scene out. Man they have some fast times on cars there!

Jon, How much power are you planning on making. Reason said, isn't a T3 a little small for a 3.0L? I guess it would give better response, but won't boost fall off in the higher rpms? Looking good tho! Can't wait to see your guy's progress!

I have an Greedy IHI RHC7 kit that has that manifold. Here are some pics of my engine bay.

http://www.stillsports.com/mkiii

The manifold is known to crack so it has been welded in th inside. I got the kit from Jose Maeso. It took a while to get but it was a good deal. It has the bling ceramic coating on it now and I will be blasing it and putting the black stuff on later.

Cheers.

AM: "T3 flanged" my GT3540R is T3 flanged :)

I think the turbo Jon is using is one of the higher HP hybrids.

IJ, your right!

Mine has a .63 A/R on the hot side, and a 60mm wheel on the intake side. Its ball bearing as well! So it will last the abuse and spin quicker ( lol..like 200rpm) Turbonetics rated this turbo at 550hp based on CFM ( and compressor map). Thats MORE than enough for me! I am aiming for a conservative 400whp this spring. I just think any more is just icing on the cake!

Either way its better than stock!

I am having ( after christmas rush ) my buddy that owns an airbrush shop airbursh on the header coating! I will get it sand blasted before then though!

IHI-RHC7:

The turbo clears fine! Like I said, I will have proof pictures later next week!
I am pointing the compressor housing DOWN just like the stocker CT. But if SPACE permits I may just run it straight and back around from the cam covers....I believe the coil pack might have to be moved if I do so.....
