One of the scariest moments of my life happened last night...

Last night, I was in the garage wrenching on my supra and had both garage doors open. I hear one of my neighbor’s mules making a funny noise. I walk to the end of my elevated driveway to investigate. Two of his mules had gotten out and were on my property next to the road. There was a stray dog trying to mess with them. I kept waiting for one of those mules to just stomp him…

I started toward the mules to shoo them back into their gate when this huge stray dog started in on me. I started backing up toward the front door of the house and he just kept coming. Teeth showing, snarling, growling, hair up on his back… Mind you this dog looks to be 100+ pounds.

I make it into the house and grab the closest gun which is my wife’s Remington 20ga Wingmaster. I head back outside and he’s gone. So I thought…

I again approach the edge of my driveway to peer over the edge when he lunges at me from the bushes. I take a few steps back as I line up the bead and take the safety off. Instantly after I readied myself he comes in for the attack. Being that the closest loads I had were 7-1/2 Bird shot, he would have to be close for them to be effective. I pulled the trigger with this dog no less than 8 feet from me as was coming in full steam ahead.

I have been bitten by dogs over the years; but, this was by far my scariest experience with a dog. I seriously feared this animal!

I am just soooo thankful that it was me and not my wife or one of my children.

What, was it a feral that was roaming, looking for food? Did you check it out afterwards?
If your neighbor has mules, I would assume you live in a rural area. You have to wonder if there are any more wild dogs nearby?

Damn dude, that had a really serious chance of sucking. I'm glad you and yours are alright. You should mention the possibility of rabies to your neighbor so he can have his livestock checked.

Yeah, I live in a rural area. I had seen the dog a few times before; but, he'd stayed his distance. He's the only stray I've seen. We have a few dens of coyotes near by; but, other than that no other dogs.

I wonder if he was rabid too. I'm telling ya...I have never seen a dog do that. Typically, if one is aggressive they'll kind of charge a little then stop a little ways away from you; but, this one was different. I've never encountered a rabid dog that I know of so I'm not sure what the symptoms are; but, this one definitely had something wrong with it.

I couldn't even sleep after the ordeal. I just kept imagining one of my kids being out there with that thing. Cujo type deal ya know...

Well, all is safe now...

And, who the hell is Cujo? You are showing your age.

Same thing I was thinking. That movie put a fear of dogs in me when I was a kid. lol.

Dogs can sense fear. That's prolly why he attacked. He have to give the the Chuck Norris stare down. They'll tuck tail and run.

Cujo, loved that movie..

(i'm 23 by the way)

I'm honestly not afraid of dogs for some reason..

people make the mistake of running from them (big mistake, you can not outrun any dog, save a chihuahua), just stand your ground, cover your face, they'll clamp onto your arm or something, but that leaves another arm to stab it in the eye, hit him in the balls, or choke his ass out..

I've pulled two fighting pitbulls apart with my bare hands before (have scars to prove it), it's nothing major, just remember we have the advantage of dexterity...!

If it's not too late, have the local Animal Control test it for rabies. Especially if you have a coyote den nearby - you do NOT want to deal with a rabid pack of coyotes!

When I was 10 I had a paper route... there was this bastard of a 3 legged dog that was a perfect angel when the owners were around, but a tyrant when they weren't. The owners denied any comments about this dog, a fairly large german shepard, being mean because he was always the nicest dog ever when they were around... even if the dog couldn't see them because they were in the house, the back yard, wherever.

Anyway, that son of a bitch would come after me even if i was on the other side of the street. The first couple times time I ran from him, and he would chase me for a while... I got tired of that and wacked him good with 10lbs of newspapers. A few weeks later I had to kick him in the head... he was hiding behind the owner's truck (I thought they were home) and came running at me. He mostly left me alone after that, for another two years I had the route... but I still dreaded that part of the route. Even now I loathe that dog.

It took many many years until I'd have anything to do with any dog bigger than a 20lbs. Well, actually, it took up until a few months ago.

There's a reason humans are at the top of the food chain.

I used to carry a water bottle full of ammonia on my bike. Dogs that came after me got a squirt in the eyes. I've never had a dog come after me twice.

Very scary! Fortunate things didn't go very bad for you or worse, wife or kids!

BTW, Cujo just didn't "do it" for me as a "scary dog"... I've known TOO MANY gentle-giants of the Saint Barnyard variety... so my vote would have been a Dobe or Rot for that role, personally.;) (yeah, I KNOW... it was "rabid"... but still...)

(Showing our age??? Just 'cause the only St. Barnyard YOU guys ever saw in a movie was BEETHOVEN is no reason for accusations... young punks!:biglaugh:)

When I lived on the farm in Lebanon, I cant remember how many of my neighbor's fighting pitbulls were put to rest by my brother or the neighbors for chasing people, kids and lifestock. I bet you were scared shitless.. sounds like something I dont wanna experience

If they cant seem to close their mouths and there's foam comin out. That's a symptom of rabies. There are others but they don't come to mind right now. Glad your ok. The worst i've ever been off with dogs is when I was chased by two pitbulls a few years back.

Running from dog's is only a reliable option if there's something to climb and you're running to it. If you're strong enough and know how, beating the shit out of them teaches a much better lesson.

Shooting them works too.
