Damn, glad things turned out well.

I got my faced ripped apart twice by dogs, it makes me a little edgy when a dog is agressive acting. I love animals but have no problem killing one if needed. Lol that movie cujo was a good old King movie.

Even named my cat qujo as it was a fitting name for him minus the rabid part. Been chased by dogs many times. Asshole dogs lol.

I'm curious what the aftermath looks like. Where did you hit him? Was it an instant kill, or were you able to have him look into your eyes just before it died?

strays suck and if there in a pack they act like coyotes/wolfs.
Wile hunting a few years ago I had to shot a pack 5+ of strays, I felt like my life was in danger because they where tracking my sent right to my blind, foaming at the mouth, acting like wild wolfs with a clear Social structure.

just remember 1 dog only has one mouth, one on one combat you have 5 weapons he only has one. you might get bit, you might hurt some but if you keep your head about you and keep his one weapon occupied you still have four to fight with.

i currently have a mostly tame 95lb coyote/shepard as a house pet. he is the product of a full coyote and a half breed coyote/shepard..
loyal as can be...but he knows im the alpha.. he occasionally tests his part in the order though.

i have been part of a full blown attack from him before.... i won therefore im still boss.
the math will always be on your side, but then again i have been raising wild ones since i was a young boy.

your best plan is not to get attacked at all, stand your ground and stare at the back of its skull....most times it will end there.
if it does come to a fight hold on to the lower jaw and push it to the dogs chest, it will not be able to close its mouth and you have control. then commence the asswooping with all of your other weapons.

for those of you who havent figured out what your natural weapons are yet(darwin would hate me for telling, but here goes) they are your hands, feet/knees, and mouth

I know that my aunts 80 lbs. female chow's neck kind of made a weird noise, and felt grind -pop when I reamed its neck off, and blacked out on the 60 lbs. male chow, I was told I crushed his skull pounding on with my fist. I did this was in a matter of seconds from the time I heard my sister screaming till the time I ran out to the back yard about 20 yard out from the back porch. She was severely being bit by to chows. Rage: icon_evil .

I hate to hear a story like that. Obviously you came across a couple of bad dogs. I love dogs their great companions and will do anything for ya. I have three great smart dogs and I'd do anything for them and they as well for me.

Yeah, I live in a rural area. I had seen the dog a few times before; but, he'd stayed his distance. He's the only stray I've seen. We have a few dens of coyotes near by; but, other than that no other dogs.

I wonder if he was rabid too. I'm telling ya...I have never seen a dog do that. Typically, if one is aggressive they'll kind of charge a little then stop a little ways away from you; but, this one was different. I've never encountered a rabid dog that I know of so I'm not sure what the symptoms are; but, this one definitely had something wrong with it.

I couldn't even sleep after the ordeal. I just kept imagining one of my kids being out there with that thing. Cujo type deal ya know...

Well, all is safe now...

Thats pretty funny I live in a rural area. I've had goats in my yard and cow/bulls as well. Not counting wild animals. Great story

For all that are curious:

I took the shot at no more than 8ft from me. That was as close as I wanted him to be and figured that the blast would be fatal at that range.

He was on his way in and kept doing this thing with his head where he would lower it, cock it to the side, and then bark, growl, and snarl while bringing his head back up to normal position. Along with this, he was doing a side to side sort of deal. Some sort of weaving action. Almost like he was trying to get behind me.

I aimed directly at his nose. I was slightly elevated compared to him. Just as I shot, he barked. The shot completely removed his nose, both eyes, upper teeth and went down his throat and blew out the back of his neck. It blew him over backwards and he fell instantly. Whew...

As I stood there absorbing all that had just happened, listening to pouring blood and a gargling type sound, he amazingly picked up his head and looked at me.

Fortunately, I had two rounds left.

Have you ever seen those videos where those guys hunt lions and tigers? The ones where that 450 pound cat is charging them and they shoot it so close to them that it lands dead at their feet?

That's how I felt!

Very well done!

On a side note, my mom raises / rescues Rotties. I can tell you now, that 95% of a dog's behaviour is based in training. Fixit is 100% correct - I've waded through more dog fights than I care to remember. My mom's never been too bright, and she had a serious problem when I refused to back down to any form of a challenge from one of the dogs ("Oh, you're messing up his drive!" - retard)

The day Boomer (one of her multi-thousand dollar boneheads) went after my little sister was the day I threw my mom out of her own house.

At the end of the day, with ANY canine, you *must* establish dominance, or you will be in for a surprise down the line. I refuse to be around people that obviously get run over by their dogs - it's simply not safe.

I just spoke with one of my neighbors a while ago and the dog that I shot bit another neighbor's grandkid two weeks ago. AND just yesterday, he chased down a bicycle rider, two folks on horseback, and a woman walking. He was more out of hand than I knew!

I was thanked for what they called a "responsible act". I was thinking to myself...responsible nothing! I feared for my life!! That was a "self defense act". :biglaugh:

Thanks to everyone for your sentiments and suggestions. I'm sure your advice will prove to be invaluable should I find myself in a similar situation again.

I can tell you one thing.....as in this instance....there will be NO hesitation!

One must remember that domesticated dogs are not a different species from wolves. We've bred them to look and act the way the do over thousands of years.

Just like cats, left in the wild they will either die or turn wild.

You said it bit someone's grandkid? Rabies is deadly, need to do whatever needs to be done for that child's sake...
