well for those of you that dont know i own a very beautiful silver 1989 Toyota Supra with a 7M-GE. In my intro post i was deciding whether i should go Torque 7M-GTE or High Revving 1JZ-GTE and now a opportunity has shown itself. My friend has introduced me to a guy who apparently just has a 1J just "sitting" (travesty i know) and hes offering it to me for a cheap cheap price ($850) but its only motor with a cut harness. Now my questions to you guys What should I ask him to determine how legit it is because obviously 850 is pretty cheap for it and it supposedly came out of a Toyota Soarer i have yet to call him for all the details but as soon as i do i will be sure to let you know...any comments are welcome help me out guys ohh also i will post up pics of the motor as soon as my friend sends em to me.

I am fully aware of the cost of the entire build but that is not what I am asking like I said this is only motor I am paying for..what I am simply asking is what questions should I present to this guy to make sure I'm not shelling out 850 bucks for a motor that could possibly not even crank or have other potential problems.....Thanks for the advice though.

ya thats really not cheap unless its a >20k 1j. I payed 700 for mine cut wires no ecu but I got a good deal because the engine had the lowest amount of ware I have ever seen on a jz. I would beat it had >15k on it.

if u wanna piece something together, get a 1j head and 2j block, cheaper...u'd also know the condition of the motor having it apart...gl

If you are doing a swap anyway from a 7MGE, definatly go for the 1jz, it will cost close to the same as doing a 7mgte swap and you will get a way more reliable motor and fun to drive. I garantee you will not regret the 1jz. I have had both, built 7M with 400+ HP and my 1jz, and the JZ is so much smoother and funner to drive. Yes it doesnt have the TQ of the 7M down low, but revving to 7500+ makes up for it. I have won quite a few races just because I could rev higher than the other guy.

$850 is an ok price for a long block, normally long blocks with no trans go for $800-1000 around here. Just make sure everything is there and it has a rear sump oil pan.

yeah my plans are to drift (OMG DRIFT?) but yeah and i was def. leaning more towards the 7m for the TQ but the sound of a JZ :evil2::evil2: but hopefully when i check this motor out it passes my inspection Wish me luck..

yeah it was pretty random i met this guy and we just starting talking about skid pads and i just brought up my plans and he said he knows a guy who could hook me up so yeah but rear sump is the best for my swap ? im gonna be honest i dont really know detailed information about the sumps but trust me by tonight ill find out..forum rat! lol thanks guys

If you're sourcing a 2j block, just get the head with it...

I will give you my 2 cents: I bought a 1jz out of a Soarer (not intentionally- I got fucked over). It has cost me a few thousand dollars, a kidney, and my left testicle to get it ready to drop. Not to mention the time it took- 4 months to aquire all of the parts.

If you're going to drift, go with the 1J. It will live through the revs over and over again. The pistons in the 7M are moving a lot faster at 7K than the 1J pistons are.

No, I don't like seeing people ripped off. If the engine has been sitting outside for long periods of time in the elements, it will rust/corrode everything and as some of the valves WILL be open, moisture or rain water gets in rusting the cylinders meaning a complete teardown and rebuild at best. Not to mention the oil or lack there of.

It's the same reason I'm against "JDM" engine swaps because you have no idea how it was stored or the milage and abuse it has. $800 is too much.
