No, I don't like seeing people ripped off. If the engine has been sitting outside for long periods of time in the elements, it will rust/corrode everything and as some of the valves WILL be open, moisture or rain water gets in rusting the cylinders meaning a complete teardown and rebuild at best. Not to mention the oil or lack there of.

It's the same reason I'm against "JDM" engine swaps because you have no idea how it was stored or the milage and abuse it has. $800 is too much.
yeah that def. makes a lot of sense I wasn't even thinking about it because I was planning a rebuild anyways but you bring up many strong points I think now what I'm gonna do is check it out and see what's up and report back and if all fails ill probably just wait for some bank and contact driftmotion. Thanks

I'm sure he wouldn't post something and not be able to back it up! That is a good point, I've thought about it before but never thought about that many details. I'm planning for a swap here soon, after 170k the 7m rod knocked. If I get the 1j, I plan to tear it down and at least replace all of the gaskets..

Haha yea. At first I wanted to stay with the 7m, but I can get a 1j for the price of rebuilding the 7m. I think the 1j will be better in the end, as the 7m has a better chance to rod knock again or bhg. Every engine can have its problems though, but I dont want to drop 2k into a rebuild and still have MORE of a risk of it failing in the future, if that makes sense.

Why dont you get a 1jz vtti motor? you'll get so much smoother engine than regular 1jz and there will be so much more torque on lower RPM. better for drifting in my opinion.

Not true, as you're rolling the dice and hoping you actually got a low milage and non abused 1J. If you spend that money on the 7M that you already have (unless it threw a rod, ect), you'd have a brand new fully forged motor that will take more abuse.

This is coming from someone that wishes he went 2J-T.....

I say go for it if you ind the engine is in good shape, tell him your a little short get him to knock it down by maybe 1 bill (~700) seems a littlebit more fair of a price.
Buy a stinger ECU with pigtail harness instead of the one with the adapter wire it into the harness at the cut points on the 1JZ, cut the 7M engine efi body plugs off far enough back to plug it into the factory connectors & reach the cut on the 1JZ harness.
+ bellhousing aftermarket flywheel clutch you could get an awsome setup for ~2500 total.

Yes, you make very good points. I hear many stories on how people with rebuilt 7m's seem to get a rod knock or bhg (even with a mhg) with less than 10,000 miles (estimating here) on the rebuild. This could either happen because of the owner not breaking it in right and using the right oil and coolant, or it could be the machine shops fault. I just figured since it will cost around the same amount, why not go with a 1j or any other motor. Don't get me wrong, the 7m is a very strong motor when built right but the chance is greater to get those problems, having to be exact and all. I did all of the maintenance and more on mine and it ran fine.. The previous owner left the bhg too long and the coolant slowly deteriated the bearings is my guess.. Other than that I haven't had any problems with it and I will not hate against it, like some do. I'm not arguing with you, you have been on here longer than me and probably know more about supras (this being my 1st). I want learn along the way, but also share my point of view and sometimes being proved wrong helps. In the end, there have been many more successful stories with the jz engines from my knowledge. I don't want to get bashed on for being wrong, if I am completely wrong you can let me know nicely. My 2 cents..

Yeah, the #1 suggestiong I can give you is to inspect before you buy. The nice think aobut the 2J is you can source them locally out of known good cars (junkyard, pull the engine out of something that's there from a collision). Getting some JDM engine on a crate that has tons of corrosion on it from sitting outside by the port to be shipped here is a gamble at best. Even worse is the warranties from most of the companies is worthless.

7M failures after rebuild is the result of a bad rebuild, nothing more...

But it this way i was in your shoes, now i just bought a 1jz and love it. If your concered about it being drivin hard most sports car have been either driven hard or pushed to the max. You got to go with your gut instinct. In the end you will make the decision, we wont be making it for you. Good luck with the swap if thats the route you so choose.
