I knew it prior to doing it but I still did anyway, impatience will always screw you when you are doing this type of work. I rented a torque wrench from Autozone, knowing full well that there is no way in hell it is calibrated and who knows what the hell it has been used for and how it has been abused. Long story short I was like, damn, why isn't this thing clicking, this seems like way too much torque. Oh wait, there we go it just got a lot easier. Did that 3 times, then on the third one, I took the wrench off and the bolt head came off too. Then I grabbed the other two and they came off as well. :nono:

So they sheared off almost flush with the flywheel mating surface. These are ARP flywheel bolts and they are ridiculously hard. My plan was to use a left handed bit, get a hole in the center and then use and extractor. Yeah right. I've tried Titanium and Cobalt bits, because that is all I can find. They don't do shit, except make a little mark where I've spent 10 minutes drilling trying to get a hole started. I've been using penetrating oil and going very, very slowly, they just won't cut into the ARPs.

I found a Craftsman diamond tipped cutter, I thought maybe I can cut a deep enough groove to get a screw driver in there. Yeah that was a no go as well. The only thing that will effectively cut these things is tungsten carbide (go figure) and I can only find cutters, no bits to drill a hole. I am thinking my only bet now is to have the motor towed to a shop and have them EDM'd out.

Can any one offer any suggestions? THanks for any help at all.

There is no stress on the threads anymore. Use a small chisel and just tap the edge to start them out. Should be easy as long as they broke due to over tightening, not cross threading.

I've tried with a chisel that is probably too big, I'm headed to the store right now to get a small one. Only thing working against me is the red locktite I used on them all. :3d_frown:

At least you were torquing them in order ::shrug::
Get another bolt, grind a bevel on one end and carefully weld them onto your broken ARPS
and crank them off.

I got two off with the chisel method!

The third will not budge and I started to screw up the surface pretty badly so I stopped. I know this is ghetto, but what do you think the chances of using JB weld to put a bolt head onto the sheared bolt will work? I don't have access to a welder.

About Autozone, I spoke with the manager, he said there was nothing he could do, they can't be liable for you screwing up your stuff using their tools. It's shitty, but I think they would be in a world of hurt if it wasn't like that. Just don't ever rent a torque wrench. I learned my lesson.

Unless they are very loose in there i doubt jb weld is going to do you any good, that stuff will break right off. If you do try it, make sure you get all oil etc off the end of the bolt so you increase your chances of it sticking.

I have a question about that Craftsman diamond tipped cutter. Did you try it both clockwise and counterclockwise with your drill? The pics you show looks like you were drilling in the wrong direction. It would only cut a small divot like your pics. Try it the opposite way. That's of course if you haven't tried it that way yet.

So your "advice" is to be a lowlife tightarse scum?

Buy the fucking tool and keep it it's a store not a library......

Here's a scenario for you : Tightarse A goes buys the tool can't be bothered grabbing the breaker bar to undo a bolt so uses the Torque Wrench to undo the balancer bolt totally screwing the calibration then returns it as hey they don't ask questions....

Idiot at the store puts it back into stock as Tightarse A has returned it looking all new as he's an expert at this sort of thing, New Guy B then buys the wrench and assembles his entire engine with it which promptly fails, do you think the store is going to replace his engine and time....

You want to be vermin fine just don't make your idiotic "suggestions" here and don't try to lecture me on forum etiquette.

HAHA really?

sorry not to ruin you scenario and shit... but the returns don't go back on the shelf, they have to go back to durlast factory to get refurbished.... please know the facts before you talk shit..

plus it's not a low life move i don't think... basically your still technically renting a tool. your give them money for the tool, once finished with the tool return it and get your money....
same exact principal if you rent their used unknown condition renatl tools.... i know you say keep the tool if you buy it, i agree but some people rent tools like NCTEXAN here and get fucked over because of the unmaintained rental tools... you can't do good work with shitty tools.

for me when it comes to buying tools, i don't go to an autozone i get them off the tool trucks, if i need a specialty tool that i'm not going to use all the time i go to autozone... you don't have to use this, all i'm saying is i'd feel better using new tools that used peices of shit.... personally.

you may think it's an idiotic "suggestion" some others may thinks it's a great idea... to each it's own my friend!

i worked at autozone before. The difference between me n typical employee's. I was trained to be a mechanic before i worked there. I know good tools vs shitty ones. I hate when people assume all AUTOZONE workers are shit.

Plain and simple it's a low tightarse vermin move, may as well steal it then return it as you're NOT paying a rental fee so don't try and justify it here.

If you want to use a new tool buy the thing, decent tools are an investment.....

No wonder the Mk3 community in general is looked down on with bullshit like this being common.

Yeah I'm sure they go back to the factory every single time to be refurbished.... :nono:

I'm with IJ 100% on this. If you're doing this kind of work, chances are you'll do it again. Just buy good tools the first time. Buying/using/returning is a complete load of crap.
