ok so here's the deal....

i have been sitting on SM for some quite time now, not posting a lot but reading, and learning, so i have read probably all of the threads on bottom end rebuilding, machinist's, and all that, and now im getting a big head ache!
I took my block appart and gave to machining shop already, and he said that its not good to paint the block before the assembly, and from what QUICKSTRIKE wrote (i bolive it was him) was a good machinist will paint or let you paint the block! and im not only talking about painting i just feel like this is not the guy, kinda have mixed feelings for this shop, this machining shop was recomended to me by couple of people but, never by a 7mgte supra owner hmmmm.....
from what i have read for last couple of days sitting here for hours and hours was that those engine are really, really delicate to anything!!!
so what im looking for now is this:

DOES ANYBODY KNOW A MACHINING SHOP LOCATED IN MICHIGAN THAT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING (can be trusted) ON A 7MGTE ??????

by the way my folder with printouts is getting full now ) i have ran out of highlighter and im tired for today hehe

Im sorry I cant help you with a local shop up there but I have a suggestion that might help. Call the local toyota dealerships and ask for the service department manager. Explain that you are looking for a reputable machine shop that knows the ins and outs of Toyota motors. Ask him who they take their machine work to. That worked out good for me here in Houston. I might have been able to find a cheaper shop, but I did get good work done.

I had my block and head at a different machine shop first and just got this bad feeling about them after the initial wark was done. I knew they didnt have a clue what they were doing so I paid for what they did so far and took the motor to someone else and paid to have it done over again.

Its really better to get better work and feel good about it, than to save a few bucks when it comes to machine work.

If you aren't comfortable with your shop - find another one. Seriously. WeezL's got a great idea there - I, personally, am willing to drive quite a ways to take my setup to a shop that I know will do the work I need.

I call them up with the clearances I need, and talk things over with them - most of the 'old school domestic' shops I talk to want to run looser clearances - this is a sure sign to run away

thanks for the inputs, i will be calling the toyota dealer today.
well he hase'nt started the engine yet, because i didnt pay him yet
he is waiting on the clerances from me and the money before he starts.
i know im susposed to paint the block before he grinds the HD area just in care some paint goes over it, he will remove it with the grinder right.

All depends on just how hard you're going to hammer the motor to how loose you build it.

I know for sustained 8000 rpm runs tight just doesn't work

it really sucks when u dont have many shops in the area. i know of like maybe 3 in the entire des moines area. one just built my buddies 2jz build so we'll see how that goes. they have a good and bad reputation though so i dunno. we'll see when i get a spare one to take up there.

anyways, point of my statement is: if u have the money, time, resources to take it to a better shop... do it.

when i drive hard i shift right under red line, im not looking to rev it up to 8000rpm i know its 2 much stress for the motor

Definetly make sure you have a good shop do the work.

I bought a car with over 4k of work in the block and head and have reciepts for the work. 80 compression in cyl 3 and massive leakdown in the head.

Find a good shop...Good luck.

yes they did, milled, decked hot tanked my block and my head, i also gave them my pistons so they can bore and hone and match up the pistons right. i also took my ss mani over there to get resurfaced. theyr really good on their prices also.

The best thing to do is make sure the bering clearances are dead on. To be very accurate here is most critical. Tell him to cut the crank and to make sure the clearances are to speck by doing each journal at a time and making sure the clearnces are tight. If he just cut the crank to say a basic -10 it may not be as accurate as cutting and measuring each clearance with the berings in place to be sure the clearances are all precise without variance. Also make sure the clock is align honed to make true the clearance to clean the alignment up. If this is done properly the las thing to to is make sure it is honed and decked properly. Painting should not be a problem, and if he cant do the job find somone that will do as you pay him to do!

where do i get the spec sheet for the bearings ? im so fucked i dont understand half of this shit

You arent in as much trouble as you thing.

Just take the time to read a quick good article on how a motor is assembled and it will make all the difference in the world.

Plus you have an entire community and someone who has gone through the process locally there with the machine shop to aid you and answer your questions.

My guy did all the work BEFORE getting paid. you get paid when your done not before that how I work thats how life works.
