I'm restoring the interior of my car whilst waiting on the parts and block. The rug was carpet was very dirty. Very very dirty. I decided to take it out because a friend said powerwashing it would work, and the previous owner was a smoker, so there was a ton of ash and smell in the carpet that I just couldn't get out of the car. The drivers side carpet was always stained, and when pushed on hard enough an oil substance could be felt on your hands. It would leave a residue and stain your pants etc.

I pulled the carpet up today and when I push on this, a LOT of oily type substance seeps out. I have no idea what it is or where it could have come from. Obviously I have to get it cleaned up, but at the same time I want to know what caused it so that I don't have this problem in the future.

Just to double, check it couldn't be the brake master cylinder correct? Just want to make sure I get the right part. It looks like I can order a new clutch master cylinder from DM pretty cheap, that should solve my problem correct?

Yep, clutch master. Brake master could leak internally, but you'd notice it in other ways. It would have to go through the brake booster, which is under vacuum to the engine, you'd be blowing smoke out the exhaust like you wouldn't believe.

Also, brake fluid strips paint, you need to be cleaning that up VERY well. The tar matting probably needs to be removed to clean it all up properly, and the matting under the carpet is probably saturated in it.

Yep, but it's not too bad as the system is so small it usually gravity bleeds to get most of the air out. If the master is shot, the slave isn't far behind, best to replace as a pair.

FUCKING STOOPID using them for Water, even Oil in a car doesn't require 2000psi lines and fittings, it's one of those fashion statements I'll never buy into.

Any suggestions of best way to clean out the residue. Shoud I just strip out the contaminated and cracked part. Kitty litter it up and wipe it down?

I come from a land down under
Denatured alcohol then wash it out one of the rubber drain plugs, repeat a couple of times till the alcohol stays cleanish then mop up the bulk with shop rags and let it air dry.

seen quite a few supra with this problem. if you notice fluid missing from your clutch master always find out where its leaking. mine has a leak but thankfully in the slave cylinder
