Hey guys, i dont really know that much about cars but i know the basics. Through out my childhood and teen age years i've seen supras around and my sisters bf actually owns one. I always admired supras and now that i started working and gotten a licensed ive been looking at MK3 supras for around a month now. Trying to find a good cheap affordable reliable one. However I came across an AD on Craigslist. This is how it reads

"
I am GIVING AWAY a 1989 Toyota Supra as a parts car. The reason why I am giving it away is because I am moving in mid-June and absolutely must get rid of the car. Please take note that I do not have a title to this car and the VIN# has been removed, though I don't know why. Car cannot be driven due to the transmission being unbolted, must be towed.

Hood, Fenders, Front bumper, headlights, wheels/tires, LSD, brakes, and everything under the hood can still be used.

If anybody would like this FREE car, please contact me at *******. Sorry i don't have any pix. I also have some misc. parts lying around so if you would like them you can take them with or without the car, yes these parts are also FREE. The main idea is to get rid of all of it.

The extra parts I have are:
1989 Toyota Supra Autmatic Transmission (has a problem with the neutral start switch i think) plus torque converter and driveshaft
1989 Toyota Supra Hatch (tinted, but peeling. can't see out of it at all)
1987 Toyota Supra Hatch (missing shocks)
1989 Toyota Supra Stock Exhaust (removed from cat)
Charcoal Canister for an MK3 Supra

Once again, everything listed in this ad is FREE, please call or email if you are interested and we can set up a time to pick up the parts or the car. My number is *********. "

So basically i called the guy up and i set up a time to get it towed. I read how it says NO VIN OR TITLE and thought it was probally stolen. But for free i didnt really care except paying 30 bucks to get it towed to my house.
When it came i noticed that the car was pretty crappy. there were no dents but there was no back hatch(I have to go pick that up at a later time). The Side of the doors were stripped and the interior was a wreck. The seats were teared up, there was no tranny, but there was the wheel and the dashboard was still there. I read the odometer and suprisingly the engine read 20,000! I was shocked. a free car with a 7mge with 20 K miles on it. I popped the hood and I took a look at everything, the engine looked pretty damn new. everything seemed to be there. The guy told me it prolly needs a new battery and just throw a tranny in there and it should run. So from here i dont know what i should really do. I really want a mk3 supra and this is perfect for me to experiment and learn more about cars.

I am willing to put max 2-3 thousand in this car, do you guys think is it worth it.
But what i am concerning is the NO VIN AND TITLE. IS there anyway for me to legally register it and somehow get the title. So should i just sell the car as a parts car and use that money to get another supra. I dont really have nothing to lose since i got this car for free. Please give me some advice since i dont know really whats the best, and sorry, i dont reallly know much. But i would really appreciate the advice. Thanks!

I will try to have some pics posted up tomorow .

Check your inner door jambs, the VIN number is printed there, and If that is torn off, i'm pretty sure it is stamped on the block. Those would be good places to start looking to legalize that diamond in the rough.

i second for checking for a stamped vin. there are several stickers around the car on various panels.

the reason you NEED to check and see what the car's history is, if you take posession of it, attempt to register and it was stolen you have knowingly taken posession of stolen property which is against the law. tread carefully...

Welcome...

this is the best place there is on the net for assistance with everything and anything to do with an MKIII.

I hope that you will enjoy putting your baby back together. And that you share your many adventures with her with us.

As for spending 2-3 Gs... thats for starters...lol. You will probably get so involved with putting her together... you will by pass your original estimate.

Always something new and better to mod her with....:naughty:

because he lives in san jose, he has access to some REALLY good pick and pulls... and they all normally have 3-8 supras on hand at any one time. you could piece this car together pretty quick.

I wouldn't bother trying to make it road worthy again. Just part it out on here and make some money to buy a Supra worth registering and driving on the roads.

If it is stolen then you're guilty of receiving stolen property. You better hope no one sees your post if you ever get charges brought against you, since you can't even claim you didn't know it wasn't stolen.

If anything you should check the VIN and make sure that the car was not reported stolen. Just cover your bases, you know?

Thanks for the input guys, you guys are right about making sure and covering all the legal aspects first. I found the VIN number and im going to run a check later on today. Thanks! If it comes out to have a bad title, maybe i should just part it out.

Check the VIN. Don't do anything until you find a VIN attached to the car.

If you can't find a VIN, get rid of the car ASAP.

Yeah I've decided to part the car out . Car is too busted, to much work and tiiime. Dont wanna fix it up now, and have too much unreliaable parts and run into legal issues. I talked with a friend and he said i can probablly part the car out anywhere from 800-1200. Can anyone give me some estimated prices on what i should sell and how much for? thanks

If you're not willing to put in a lot of work and/or more than 3 grand, you need to pretty much forget about supras right now.

Anyway. I have a feeling that you're going to find it not being worth your time and energy parting it out, $800 - $1200 seems a bit too optimistic (From what I've seen, you can get a complete car for that much). On top of that, you have the problem of it more than likely being stolen - vin Numbers don't go walk-abouts unless someone is trying to hide something.

Cuts your loses and take it to a junkyard - Getting busted for selling stolen goods isn't worth the pittance you'll get from a part out ;).

Don makes a very good point. It takes alot of work and time to part out a supra and make any money. Alot of times people aren't just sitting around waiting for some to part a car out. There is always some one doing it already , it is some what a compation to sell parts for a reasonable price on here. There are alot of people that have alot of extra parts and they will sell them cheap. So unless you got alot time, or if you want the pratice i say just take it to the junk yard. You should be able to get your tow money back and few more dollars but i don't think you will get rich from it. Good luck with other projects though

If it is indeed stolen, which it appears to possibly be, you can be charged legally for parting it out, just like the owner of a chop shop. My advice is to dump it somewhere and pretend you never touched it. It's not worth a felony charge. Also, if the rightful owner (Maybe on this board) realizes it's his, there could be some vigillante action too! I know if mine was stolen, and I got a lead like this, the Charles Bronson Series "Death Wish" would look like a Ice Cream Social! Good luck!
