Well on ebay they sell the vinyl pattern for it... see the attachment? This is what I copied when they were on ebay...

The thing about those is that they are designed to go on the OUTSIDE of your lenses...which I think it retarded! If I wanted that I would just mask off the outside of the lens and paint it. What I did with those tails and the ones on my own car is inside, like I said before...that way the outside of the lens looks unaltered, but the pattern they emit is completely different.

a pattern? no, just some masking tape and shelf paper. The shelf paper is sticky backed vinyl and its easy to cut and use to mask off the areas you want to stay red. Then I just used black plastic paint. Realize your painting on the back side of the lens so the lenses still look kind of red...well, dark red.

The hardest part is taking the lenses off from the back part. Its not really meant to come apart.

Question did you paint over the white part? the reverse light part? or covered that? What kind of black plastic paint did u use?(Brand)

In a nutshell heres how ya do it:

first ya gotta take the lenses off the backers. to do this ya need to pull the little pins that are melted into place that hold the two pieces together. I used a soldering iron to get the metal pins hot enough that they would pry out of the plastic. Then using a hair dryer, I heated up the edges of the lenses so that the old butyl rubber sealant would become soft and pliable enough to carefully pry the lens off. Ya really gotta work carefully here and make sure you get the whole thing hot enough that the lens comes off without cracking it.

After I rinsed everything with soapy water and scraped out most of the old sealant, I cleaned the inside of the lenses with Total Prep™. I then masked the reverse lights. The two circles I masked using the shelf paper I cut out using a big ass coffee cup as a guide, and I covered every other "rib" in the turn signals. Then I painted em using Krylon plastic paint. Let em dry, reseal using fresh butyl rubber and put em back on.

(butyl rubber in case you didnt know is mainly used in window replacement. Most auto parts stores that sell body and paint supplies carry it. I buy it by the roll in various diameters. It never gets hard, and will remain tacky forever. Its great when you wanna not only stick something together, but seal it at the same time.)

Those look really awesome, so much better than the stock tails. I was just curious what it would look like with the center section blacked out so I made this chop......................just another option.

OMG...That is too awesome for words! I have a new goal! Thanks Rajunz!

edit: It kinda reminds me of the MKII's that had the rear hatch and bumper painted black...I had always thought that was awesome...now here's something like that for the MKIII! Awesome...

Looks great! Could you use the same process to tint them from the inside out without spraying the outside? Or would that just prevent the transmission of light but still keep the lens appearing red on the outside?

I was just out driving...and I noticed that the new Dodge Charger's (not sure which models) have the same kinda thing going on w/ the tails...

Any ideas on what I could use to black out the paint? I don't know if this is feasible, but I was thinking several layers of window tint, maybe? I think I am going to have to take it back off anyway, because the gaskets need to be replaced, and it doesn't fit perfectly for some reason (rubbing the hatch)...

edit: where can I get sheets of that black vinyl?
