Okay I've got an engine thats been sitting awhile waiting to go into my Supra. however I want to do some cleaning up before it goes in. anway. I"m trying to get the Crankshaft Pulley Bolt off. IT WILL NOT COME OFF!!! I've tried everything I Could think off. I had it on an engine stand to start w/.. took my impact gun to it.. no luck.. Froze it and tapped it w/ hammer.. no lu ck.. heated it.. no luck. heated.. then froze it. no luck. Tried a 3 foot long breaker bar.. no luck. My last attempt. was dropping the engine onto 2 4x4 blocks of wood. mounting the flywheel. and the starter. lodging the breaker bar against the ground and tapping the starter to an extra Battery.. W/ 2 guys on top of the motor.. It STILL jumped around. So.. i'm at a loss for ideas. I had hoped the starter Idea would have worked.. but nope. Thanks for any input.

Pull the pan off and wedge a block of wood between the crank and the block so it can't rotate, then hit it with a good impact gun or huge breaker bar...

or the trick my friend taught me, remove spark plug #1 and place crack so tht the #1 piston is at teh lowest point, then grab some rope that would fit into the spark plug hole and keep shoving it in there until it seems full, then move the crank up so that all that rope is compressed in there and the crank pulley wont move anymore, use a breaker bar to get it off after that, this worked with me, so you should try it

easiest way to get it on and torque it properly, when the engine is out of the car, is to put the flywheel on, get a piece of metal and put one bolt on the flywheel holding it, and one bolt on the block so it cant spin.

normally the bolt comes off before you snap the piece of metal, and i used pieces of aluminum...

OR

get a bigger air compressor, mine only does like 130psi and took it off like a champ.

I have used both of these methods and either will work just fine. If you use the rope method make sure you remove the timing belt and close the valves for the #1 cylinder. Don't want to bend those valves.

Crank trick is safer in that regard as the crank is stronger than the pistons...

Yeah, 3' breaker bar isn't gonna cut it...

Try and get a hold of a 3/4 impact wrench. My buddy has one that works without fail... Bop Bop and it is off...

Tried the wood in between crank and block.. no luck. Might try the rope trick.. but its honestly no different then lodging 2x4 in crank. I was REALLY dissappointed the starter trick didn't work, was really counting on that one.. and I have no place to readily get a 3/4 impact gun from. now i just need to find a REALLY long pipe.. (6 feet is rediculous) Thanks for all the ideas.. i'm just really shit outta 'em.

Many of the bigger parts stores have a tool loaning program. See if you can get a hold of a 3/4 impact, and the proper 3/4 socket. Use that and the 2x4.

Make a mental note to always take this thing off before removing the motor from the car. That will ease the removal, and save you all of this trouble.

I'm in agreement with the other people in this thread: I think your two best options are a bigger impact gun (e.g. a 3/4" gun) or a breaker bar with the mother of all extensions. When I pulled my crank pulley the last time, I used a breaker bar and put my jack handle on the end of it. In total, the whole thing was about 7-8 feet long, and it worked perfectly.

The rope trick can work, but I really wouldn't recommend it. The block of wood is a much better idea.

check your local hardware store for pipe scraps. we cut pipe at ours and always have a ton of sections on hand we'll let people borrow. i've even grabbed 10 foot sticks off the rack for stubborn bolts before :D

Something to think about: The OEM damper has rubber in it...heat is not good for rubber. Not too sure I would use that damper.

I was just about to post this. Guys, if you're heating up that damper, you're going to kill it. Get a new one.

Also, get a better impact gun. The one I picked up for a few bucks at a yard sale has never failed me. LOL. (and make sure you oil them properly; it matters!)

So im at the same point you are, i tried everything to get the crank pulley bolt off. I ended up having to take it to toyota who got it off in 10 seconds. Lesson learned is break it before the motor is pulled.

When re-installing my crank pulley, I found that it is probably not the smartest idea to wedge the block of wood between the block and crankshaft...I could not get anywhere near 195 lb-ft without bending the block more than I was comfortable with.

As far as removing the pulley bolt goes, get yourself a quality impact wrench, something that will give you 500 lb-ft+ of reverse torque (your costco/harbor freight $40 special won't come close to cutting it...mine sure as hell didn't). A snap-on impact gun made quick work of the crank pulley on my engine....sitting on the stand...without anything securing the crankshaft :)
